I've finally calmed down enough to gather my thoughts. Today's game is exactly the reason why I stopped posting and reading the game threads. I did my fair share of yelling and screaming in this game, most of the time directed at Kiffin. I've never seen a coach who was so brilliant, and yet so hard headed at the same time.
This was the best downhill running game we've had all season, and yet we went through stretches where we didn't run at all. The jet sweeps and screens only work in well timed spots, and usually not at all against SEC defenses. You look at Hurts through most of the first half, and he was only averaging 4 yds a completion. Yet at the same time, when Kiffin was right, we were dominant. Comes with the territory I guess, but I still pull my hair out a lot in these types of games.
He almost reminds me of a quarterback who gets locked on to one receiver, and doesn't go through progressions. Almost every play he either goes to Stewart, Ridley, Hurts, or run up the middle. Few check downs, rarely does Howard get involved, and it seems as other weapons are under utilized as well. Not sure how much is placalling, or execution, but it seems like his plays don't have a lot of options unless it's an RPO.
With that said, even with the frustration, I don't know many OCs out there who I'd rather see developing our freshman qbs. He's one of the best offensive minds out there, I just don't understand all of his inconsistencies.
Most importantly though, we saw Hurts growing up. He made some mistakes, but he was clutch, he was composed, and he was patient. When he was running the ball, he was lights out. He gives our offense a dynamic that we've never had before. Seemed like he still needs some work gaining timing and chemistry with the receivers, and also he needs some of the good ones to not be dropped. I fully believe that he has among the highest upside one of our quarterbacks has ever had.
Also proud of our defense. The offense sputtered in stretches, but they never let us get out of the game. It was obvious at times that they knew they had to takeover the game, and they did. This will most likely be the best overall defense we ever have.
Great win today. Promising that we could play as poorly as we did in the first half, and still come away victorious.
I now bid you all an exhausted Roll Tide.
