Georgia star running back Nick Chubb’s status for Saturday’s home game against Tennessee due to a sprained left ankle is uncertain, coach Kirby Smart said Monday.
"He's going to continue to rehab really hard,” Smart said. “We're obviously hopeful he'll be able to do something, but we won't know more until later in the week."
The junior is fifth in the SEC in rushing at 105.5 yards per game.
Chubb was not seen in practice during the one media viewing period. He was spotted on Monday with a walking boot on his left foot by UGASports.com.
He rushed for 57 yards on 12 carries against Ole Miss before being injured late in the second quarter and did not return. That 4.8-yard per carry average was well ahead of his 3.3 average at Missouri and 4.0 against Nicholls. His yards per carry this year of 5.1 is three yards less than what he averaged last season before his season-ending knee injury.
Chubb is sixth on Georgia’s all-time rushing list with 2,716 yards and only 19 yards away from passing Knowshon Moreno for No. 5.
Georgia was led by freshman Brian Herrien in rushing against Ole Miss. He had 78 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns.
"Brian has done a great job since the beginning," center Brandon Kublanow said. "So has Elijah (Holyfield). They both stepped in Saturday and both ran really well. As you can tell, they're hard runners. It's exciting to see a couple of young guys step in and want to play. I don't really know what's going on for Nick."
Holyfield, a freshman, had 27 yards on four carries, all in the fourth quarter.
"I think getting Elijah some experience in-game was valuable," Smart said. "Relly, we had been wanting to do that. It wasn't that we were holding back, just only so many guys you can get carries to. With Nick's injury, we didn't know at the time whether or not if he was going to be able to play this week. We still really don't. So we were sitting there going, `We better get Elijah ready.'"
