Jalen Hurts - Legit Heisman candidate?

How many times do you hear people talk about "the best player on the best team" in regards to the Heisman?

If Jalen keeps leading this team to victories, especially the way his play has been progressing, he'll certainly at least be in the discussion.

Hurts' current QBR rating is at 75.8, which puts him third in the conference and 18th in the nation. However, he's played some of his best games in the big games - with the Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Tennessee games making up three of his top four QBR performances. In fact, Hurts has posted the highest QBR in the SEC for each of the past two weeks.

If Hurts can average a QBR rating for the Texas A&M and LSU games approximate to what he averaged against Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Tennessee - ≈87.0 - then he'll likely find himself with the highest QBR in the SEC for the season at that point.

And, going by the last few seasons, if he can raise his game a little and average a QBR of around 90.0 from here on out, he should be able to end the season with a QBR of around 86.0-87.0, which would likely put him in the top five nationally.

At that point, after the SEC Championship game, his stat line would probably look something like this:
Passing: 230 completions on 345 attempts (66.7%) for 2970 yards with 20 TDs & 6 INTs
Rushing: 138 rushes for 830 yards (6.01 avg) with 15 TDs
Total Offense: 3800 yards and 35 TDs

Those are Heisman type numbers.

And it's not that far-fetched. That's assuming about a 10% or less improvement in passing attempts per game, completion percentage, yards per completion, TDs to yards passing, INTs per attempt, and yards per rush from here on out. A 10% improvement across the board from here on out is not too much to expect for really any true freshman starter, much less for one that's shown the improvement he has already shown.

He already IS in a legit candidate in the sense that people of influence are speaking of him in this light. Some may want to question whether he should be, but there can be no question that he already is a legit Heisman candidate. Again, people in positions of influence, including Vegas odds makers, across the nation have put him there. Interestingly, it sure has not come from his own fanbase, some of whom still do not realize what he already is NOW. I said only some 😊.

He's definitely a contender but unless there's an injury or dramatic falloff Lamar Jackson is easily the front-runner. By a lot.

One thing going against him that some haven't thought of is that he's already missed about a game's worth of stats and CNS won't leave him in games to pad stats when we are ahead. Others will have the starter in the 4th chunking bombs with a 30 point lead.

There were one or two series during the Viles game where Hurts and his recievers just looked lost. I'm not sure if it was the recievers fault or Hurts, but that reminded me that Jalen is just a freshman and it gonna take a while to catch up to the speed of the game.

Yah, at least one of those was Hurts (Fr) rot Diggs (Fr). It's going to happen - as long as it's not picked I'm not worried.

Hurts would have to be almost flawless the rest of the season completing a high % of all his passes, including some long ones for TDs. That's along with showcasing his run and offense management. Even then I don't see it. Next year though...

He's already becoming a household name in many homes across the country. College football fans watch Bama.

Again, he's NOW, THIS year, a legit candidate. According to Sportsbook he is the 6th most likely to win @15-1, behind Jackson 1-2, Watson 4-1, Barrett 8-1, Peppers and Browning 10-1. The next most likely is Cook, Ward, Falk and Mayfield 40-1. There's a big gap between the top 6, which includes Bama's own Jalen Hurts 😊, and the rest. Will he win it is another question altogether. But the fact that he IS NOW a legit candidate is indisputable. Not only is he included by Vegas, but the national media and local media from across the country are mentioning him in this context. It seems that some Bama fans are among the diminishing segments who can't or are unwilling to see this. It's amazing.

Edit: just saw where ESPN named Jalen SEC Mid-Year MVP. Also, ESPN's SEC blog has a Finebaum interview with an SEC Country writer who was also making the case for Jalen to be invited to NY for the Heisman ceremony.

Lets be real: unless Jackson collapses on the field, he's walking across that stage in NYC in December.
