"Clay County would be well-served to do a thorough analysis of where the county wants to be ... with respect to education and economic development," Morton wrote to Griffin.

"It strikes me that if you were to assemble a true blue ribbon panel to analyze the facility and instructional needs of the county, consolidation of the two high schools into one would be a worthy outcome."

In an estimate Griffin presented to panel members, he predicts any possible resolution to consolidate high schools would come in January, along with a petition to the state for the grant.

If everything is approved, a new high school might be ready to open by fall 2009.
