Make that 11 expected early enrollees for Alabama's football program | The Bama Beat - al.com

Huge, huge, huge amount of talent flocking to Tuscaloosa for the spring.

It will pay huge dividends for the CBs who could play a ton next year, as well as the OL and Mr. Sims and Mr. Foster, who could kick-off, if not more.

Also, a note on Darius McKeller:

I totally agree with a comment you made about three months ago that these early enrollments make this class even more valuable!

Three can be backcounted to the 2009 class. I believe they will be the three grayshirts, OL Darius McKeller, DL Anthony Orr, LB Petey Smith from the last signing class.
Add the eight early enrollees above to these three grayshirts and the total is 11 new enrollees for Alabama that will be able to participate in Spring practices.

So, how much playing time will Jalston Fowler see this fall? Will he become the 3rd RB in place of Upchurch? Opinions?

From what I'm hearing Eddie Lacy is positioning himself as the 3rd RB.

But, with CNS the best players usually see the field so you never know. Fowler might get in ttown and make a splash.

I would expect Fowler to redshirt unless there are injuries at the position. When you factor in the depth that is already in place plus the fact that Jalston hasn't played in a year, a redshirt seems like the best bet. JMHO.

With National Signing Day still weeks away, a portion of Alabama football's 2010 signing class is about to be finalized.

Barring any last-minute surprises, as many as 11 early enrollees are expected to begin classes today at UA and be officially added to the Crimson Tide's roster. New players began moving to campus this weekend and will be able to participate in offseason workouts and spring practice with the defending national champions.

Today's expected list includes six high school players who are thought to have completed course work early, three grayshirted signees from last season, one junior college transfer and former Vigor standout Jalston Fowler, who wasn't able to play high school football this past season because of AHSAA rules on age limitations.

Can the school officially discuss a recruit that has entered school but hasn't signed a LOI or actually received the scholarship?

Lacy did slip my memory. Thanks, guys. But is he as physical as Fowler or more of a speed runner?
Lacy is a blend of power and speed, similiar to Ingram and Richardson. His highlights are extremely impressive, and I think had his grades not been a question mark, he would have been a legitimate 5 star recruit coming out of HS last year, instead of a 4 star. He has the size and speed to be another great one.

No they can not be discussed publically or officially by the school until NSD or after that with the exception of the midyear JUCO transfers. The reports coming out in the press about the early enrollees are just public reports that they have enrolled in school. Once the commits sign the LOI the school can publically talk about them. The HS commits can enroll early but only sign an LOI on NSD which is on Feb. 3rd this year.

Early Signing Period Penalties
Prospective student-athletes who will participate in football are prohibited from signing an NLI during the early signing period. A student who signs an NLI during the early period in a sport other than football will be ineligible for practice and competition in the sport of football during the student’s first year of enrollment at an NLI member institution, and shall forfeit one season of eligibility in the sport of football.
In circumstances where a student’s primary sport is not football, but the student anticipates participating in football, the student should delay signing an NLI until either the football signing period or during the regular signing period for all other sports.
National Letter of Intent
Initial Enrollment in Four-Year Institution. This NLI applies only to prospective student-athletes who will be entering four-year institutions for the first time as full-time students. It is also permissible for 4-2-4 transfer student-athletes who are graduating from a two-year college to sign the NLI. No prospective student-athlete enrolling at midyear shall sign an NLI, with the exception of midyear two-year college transfer student-athletes in football, who must graduate at midyear for this NLI to be valid.

You can find the anwer to virtually any NCAA recruiting question in the Tide Fans thread which is linked below and also a sticky thread at the top of the recruiting board.

Does anyone have any idea as to whether there is any likelihood that Jalston Fowler ends up linebacker rather than running back? He appears to large enough and fast enough to be an impact player at that position.
