The Drive-By Truckers are doing 2 shows at the Shoals Theater in Florence July 23 and 24. This is the first time they have played in their hometown since 2004 I believe. You can buy tickets at Cork-Industires.com if anyone is interested. If you have never heard them before they are great. True storytellers.

A truly gifted band that is now hdqtr'd in Athens, GA. They are great singer songwriters. Patterson Hood, one the founders, is from Florence and has a new solo album out as well -"Murdering Oscar" (I went to HS w/Patterson). They have a sound very similar to Drivin' n Cryin' and early REM.

Haven't seen them in a while, but what I remember is more Skynyrd than REM.
And no offense to Patterson Hood, but Cooley's songs are the best :P
Never thought of Skynyrd while listening to their old stuff or new. To each his own..... As for Cooley, he is a good songwriter in his own right, but Pat is very talented - his solo project is getting great reviews and is selling well.

They both write some hell of songs. Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs) is a must buy. I ordered tickets for the Thursday night show on the very small off chance that Jason Isbell comes on and does a few shows with them. May end up going to the Friday night show also though if tickets dont sell out.

They arent untill the 23rd and 24th. Tickets are still available if anyone is interested.
I did see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit last night (ex member of DBT). They were great. Jason played a couple of his songs from DBT then did songs from his 2 solo albums. He is worth checking out also if he ever is around your area. A different sound from DBT, but same great writing ability

Alabama is 2- and 3-deep all over the place with full grown, meaner-than-he!! men. It's almost not fair making college kids play against them. Any Saban-coached team is going to be deep as he!! with recruits that have elite size, strength and experience at their position and they are going to play with incredible physicality.
I support PAWS.

But if you're doing a rock opera about Lynyrd Skynyrd, you've got to have that three-guitar sound down, something the Truckers worked on. Hood says of the experience, "It was really hard, but it was really fun. The challenging part is not to have it be cluttered. And really for that, we looked to the master. We went back to Skynyrd. We don't sound anything like Skynyrd -- none of our players play anything like any of their players -- but there were some fundamental things that they did that you can follow...for each guitar player to have their own space to work within". Hood likens the sound to "walking into a fight really, really well armed" and adds that it "definitely captures your attention".
I know Pat's (that's how I knew him before he was old enough to drive) dad, David, who was one of the original Swampers (they were more my style). I lived across the street from David's ex-mother-in-law (Mrs. Patterson) for about four years. It's funny looking back, but Pat used to cut my grass for some spending money. He had a band that practiced in Mrs. Patterson's basement when he was still in junior high and I believe that Jay Johnson, whose dad was also a Swamper (Jimmy Johnson), was a member of the band at that time. You could hear them all over the neighborhood.
