Best Places To Dine in T-Town?

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

Let me recommend Little Italy... it's a pizza place that opened in the Town Center on the Strip where 5 Guys used to be...

It's a small family chain, but man oh man... the slices are huge, and they LOAD the toppings on them. Best of all, it's pretty cheap. $1.80 for a thin crust slice, $1.90 for a thick and then it goes up based on the toppings.

I have eaten there many times since it opened back in the spring... it's going to be an absolute gold mine when the semester starts and football season hits. It doesn't hurt that it's open to 3:00 A.M. as well.

You have to go to Wintzell's and get some oysters :biggrin2: /shameless plug lol...

Seriously, if you want some great pizza, try Tut's across from the strip. Also Buffalo Phils is a great place to grab some chicken wings and beer.

Prime Rib Biscuits from Wilhagens is on my top 5 list.

Tut's basically kept me fed my freshman year. I hold a special place in my heart for that place.

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

BEST

- Moe's BBQ is pretty new and is incredible.
- City Cafe is the best/cheapest home cooked meal you'll ever have, but on a game weekend it will be beyond packed.
- Hooligans has insanely good burgers to cure those hangovers.
- Big Daddy's Cafe downtown has real good gyro's.
- Chuck's Fish is incredible.
- Hokkaido is the best Japanese in town.
- Big Bad Wolves BBQ sets up next to the Houndstooth on game days. GREAT BBQ sandwiches and the BBQ nachos are epic.

OVERRATED

- Cafe Venice is under new management..not impressed.
- Mugshots sucks.
- Nicks in the Sticks is good but a good ways away (not good while drinking)
- Dreamland BBQ (just go to Moe's if you want BBQ)
- The Beartrap (overpriced, not very good)
- Innisfree (again, overpriced, not very good)

BARS

- Gallettes (gotta get a yellow hammer early in the day before kickoff)
- Innisfree (after the game, this place will be packed)
- Houndstooth (voted top sports bar in the SEC year in and year out)

Cafe Venice recently closed due to their new management.

As for the bars, The Houndstooth lost a lot of its appeal when they tore down the original building and put up a train station in its place. It looks way too sterile to be a bar, especially in regards to what it used to be like.

If you want a good, grimy, dark bar with atmosphere and great live, original music... it's Egans, hands down. I also highly recommend The Alcove, which is about a block or two behind City Hall. No smoking on the inside, a great patio area, and a fantastic beer selection.

Meh, a little too emo for me. Houndstooth will be packed for Florida game weekend for sure. The Alcove is nice, but way too tiny and anything that far away is bad news for me. If you're looking for a good time after the game, it's definitely Innisfree or the Tooth.

Not to stat a music argument, but Egan's isn't "emo" - it's just a great rock and roll bar, where all the Tuscaloosans who grew up on punk rock retire to. Innisfree is sterile as hell - any Irish-themed bar should at least have some Irish music on occasion - you'll hear more of that at Egan's.

Best BBQ on game day is hands down Big Bad Wolves. Not even close.

The Egan's comment was more based on the crowd. I like to at least be in a place with some women to look at, and Egan's ain't it.

edit - Innisfree will definitely have a good band for home games..even the bands they've had during the summer weren't all that bad.

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

I've not been to Chuck's yet, but I want to - I hear very good things.

I realize I'm a food snob, but unless you're looking for gameday food - pizza, burgers, bbq - or soul food, Tuscaloosa's dining is pretty weak.
It will get stronger this fall with TIN TOP opening! This is a great seafood restaurant in Bon Secour and very popular in Baldwin County. It has a tremendous menu and is top notch. It is supposed to open in Tuscaloosa in time for football season.

Epiphany, across the street from Chuck's, is another option for finer dining in Tuscaloosa.

My two cents -

Tuscaloosa hasn't been the same since they closed Soloman's, Wings and Thing's got fancy becoming buffalo phils, BAMA Bino's closing, and Big Daddy (Dreamland) passed away.

City Cafe is awesome, their breakfast was great, but you almost have to have a two hour break to have lunch because its packed.

I still crave Taco Casa-nuf said

The resturaunt that I couldn't believe was still open was Mr Gatti's. Decent Italian.

Agree with you on that. Id rather eat breakfast at Wright's in Alberta or Buddy's in Northport.
Maybe they are both better under their new management, but IMHO the previous management left a lot to be desired in the cleanliness department. Of course, I guess that's why there's more than one restaurant in town, because we all like different things.

Re: Best Places To Eat At T-Town?

Kind of surprised with all the restaurants mentioned that no one has suggested Cypress Inn. The last time I was there I was disappointed in my meal and in the service. I don't know if it's changed hands or it was just a bad weekend.

That being said, it was my #1 spot to go eat and the muffins are still the best. Any of you T-town natives know the story there? I won't give up on it until I've eaten there again to test the theory. And I did get to meet Bart Starr there.

My recommendation is that you go to Dreamland, (the original), just so you can say you went. You won't be disappointed and you can say you tried them. There are a lot of opinions about the quality of other BBQ places and some are really good, but none have the rep that Dreamland does.
I agree about the Waysider being over-rated. I'd eat there again, but I wouldn't wait an hour to get in.
