Didn't they say during the game that Masoli was named a team captain for this game?

That is more than a little surprising to me. He just got there a couple of weeks or so ago.

Also, I was shocked when Crowe put Ivory in at QB for the game-tying 4th quarter drive & 2 pt conversion. Blanchard had led them to consecutive TDs scores to tie the game, yet here comes Ivory. It worked out fine, of course.
Blanchard threw the 30 yd TD pass on 4th & 15 to pull within 1, then threw the 2pt conversion pass to win the game...

I don't know how many here had a chance to watch Ole Miss-Jax State, but I got it on ESPN Game Plan.

It would be a vast understatement for me to say that it was the most unusual game I've ever seen.

I've honestly never seen so much of a momentum turn around in any football game. And after watching the game in it's entirety I have to think it may possibly be the biggest upset in college football history.

Ole Miss started Nathan Stanley at Quarterback and he looked like Eli Manning to start the game. His first six pass attempts he was 5-6 for 113 yards and three touchdowns. And I'm telling you Ole Miss's receivers were so much bigger and faster than Jacksonville States DB's it wasn't even fair.
They were getting open 10 and fifteen yards for long touchdowns.

And the Ole Miss defense was also downright scary. Big, fast, physical, and totally dominating the Gamecocks who could do absolutely nothing right.

After five minutes of the game I honestly turned to my wife and said.."This could end up 100-0). It truly looked that way.

And then...guess what?? Nutt replaced Stanley with Masoli.

He looked ok, don't get me wrong. He came in with the score 21-3 and actually led the Rebels to ten first half points.

But when he was in the game, Ole Miss went nearly totally to the run and abandoned the long pass attempts Stanley had been so effective with.

It shortened the game time wise, which was a blessing for a worn out and out physicalled Jacksonville State team which literally was getting run out of the stadium.

And you could just sense a vibe when Masoli came in, that the entire team lost something. Very hard to describe. But they went from a bunch of fire breathing dragons to just kind of going through the motions.

Once Jax State had a couple of breaks go their way....it was night and day.

They flat out lined up and ran over that hyped Ole Miss front seven in the second half.

Everyone knows the end result. But the amazing thing to me still, is that Nutt, in the second half rarely played Stanley, and with the game on the line, Masoli was his QB. That was obvious.

End result. Stanley who passed for 113 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter and a half, ended up with 133 total passing yards.

And Ole Miss didn't attempt another "bomb" after the first quarter.

I don't know what Nutt was thinking but I can tell you right now, if he had of left Stanley in the game, Ole Miss would have won by a score of something like 59-17. Jax State had no answer for him.

But he couldn't beat 'em watching from the sidelines.

Just simply a weird game. I'm fairly good with words, but unless you saw it, it can't be described.

But I'm very happy for the Gamecocks cause I simply don't like Ole Miss..lol...and you have to love Jack Crowe.

But that one yesterday was simply unbelievable.

sip
I DVRed this off Game Plan and am headed home to watch it. I'll let you know tomorrow what I thought. (I'm sure I agree with you 99.9%).

Just remember folks - THIS is what Houston Nutt is known for.

He's also known for knocking off Big Dogs he has no business beating.

We BETTER bring our A game this year or mark my words we'll be standing there wondering "How the..?"

Here's one most of you probably don't remember.

Jack Crowe was the guy who called the play in the 1984 Iron Bowl that won the game for Alabama. Auburn had fourth and goal at the Bama one and only needed a FG. So Pat Dye, of course, channels the future phantom known as Wingnut and says, "I think we'll run the ball."

So Crowe calls the play. Rather than call the play that beat Alabama in 1982 - "Bo Over The Top" - for some reason Crowe called a pitch to Brent Fullwood. He and Jackson collided and our defense (which was good that year despite a 5-6 record) kept him out of the end zone.

Crowe got canned at Auburn over that one, too.

I'm gonna tell you something. That kid was phenomenal.

My friends and I were sitting there asking..."Did we not offer this kid"?

He was that impressive. Undersized possibly for the SEC, or at least according to "standards", but I was very impressed with his performance. He ultimately was the spark that gave the Gamecocks life in the second half.
Yes size is what hurt him last year. Cherokee County runs the spread and he put up huge numbers each year. His height was the killer in his recruitment.

I was so shocked to here about this upset. You have to wonder if Ole Miss is going pack it up this season, or if they will be able to bounce back and salvage this season. I realize this may be a bit premature, but Ole Miss could be in real trouble, especially if the team splits over qbs.

I find it hard not to like Houston Nutt. But I wouldn't want him coaching the Tide.

When Franchione bolted to Texas A&M (and oblivion), I was told by a big Texas A&M fan not to worry, that we were going to get Houston Nutt. All that was nutty, of course.

As I understand it, Houston Nutt was hand-picked by Frank Broyles, who also coached Jimmy Johnson. Nutt and Johnson are both good 'ol boys who played at Arkansas. Johnson did what Nutt probably could not do, coach at the University of Miami, and Nutt is part of the FCA, which I doubt Johnson has ever been a part of.

You hire Houston Nutt, you've got immediate fireworks. The only trouble is, once and a while a Roman Candle lit by Nutt sputters, fizzles, and falls over before reaching its intended journey. As an SEC fan, how can you not like that? -- as long as he's coaching against you and not for you.

The game I remember somewhat similar to this OM-Jax State game was when Mike DuBose's Bama team played LSU either at B-D or LF, and Kevin Faulk was the running back for LSU. The Bama quarterback brought the Bama offense down the field to about the three yard line and suddenly DuBose switched QB's. We didn't score, and we lost a game we should have won -- just like Nutt did yesterday.

The key to Houston Nutt is his imagination. He gets an idea, and brother, it is going to materialize on the football field. Never mind all that stuff about playing it close to the vest. That's not Houston Nutt. If it works out, fine -- Houston Nutt has contributed to the colorful part of the SEC -- as surely as the red and blue of Ole Miss. If it does not work out, suddenly he looks like a neurotic swami who tells fortunes on the side in a tent.

How can you not like the SEC West this year? There's Nutt, and then there's the other gambler, Miles. But Miles doesn't have the imagination Nutt has. Miles did come up with that over-the-shoulder pitch by the kick-holder a few years ago, but other than that his gambles have been pretty much run-of-the-mill. It's Les' EXPLANATIONS of what happened that are colorful.

I have already posted that IMO Masoli is bad karma for the Rebs. He will play a lot and put up some good numbers, but the wins are going to be hard to come by. Nutt should have stuck with Stanley.

Two stunners for me. I watched a bit of the OM-Jax game on ESPN3 before switching to the start of the Bama game. I figured OM would win in a walk. First stunner was to see that Jax caught up with OM and then ultimately won the game.

Second stunner was reading the above posts stating Masoli was voted a team captain. How the heck can that happen??! Surely the OM players could have found someone to bestow that honor on who's been in the program longer than a few weeks... :conf3:

Sorry OM lost the game. SEC takes a (minor) hit on this one.

Since I live in exile in Memphis I have seen first hand the general state of mourning among the Ole Sis faithful. The biggest problem Houston Nutt has is that he does not love recruiting. I know they keep saying that his recruting classes are in the top 20 every year, however the true story is that he generally signs several "projects". The only reason for the Masoli experiment is that Nutt did not prepare by recruiting several qb's in the last couple of years. This is what happens when you do not do your job as a recruiter.

I think that he should never have been allowed to play this year for Ole Miss, and I think that the dreams of the Ole Miss faithful of an Oregon style offense in Oxford with Coach Nutt in command is nothing more than a pipe dream.

What's ironic is Crowe got fired from Arkansas by losing a game like that
Yes he did...Citadel in 1992. Crowe was fired the next day. I lived in Fayetteville at the time - dark day.

We're hoping this is the year we finally return to greatness with the loss to Citadel being the low point.

Yep. Puzzling, isn't it?

I guess Crowe didn't care who was "hot" he was gonna rotate QBs. Lucky that it didn't backfire on him (jmho).

When the Rebel players voted for a 2-time loser/convict to be team captain, they got what they got. To quote a Gameday sign I saw in the crowd Saturday morning, "Masoli for HeisTman".
