Consider the source (link to the Daily Oklahoman), but it's an interesting read nonetheless.

A Texas source said over the weekend that UT might encourage Mack Brown to retire, that the ‘Horns might be ready to commence with the Muschamp era. Not because of any dissatisfaction of Brown, but because of a belief in Muschamp. That’s the extent of Texas’ devotion to Muschamp, who is in his third year as the UT defensive coordinator and has been designated Brown’s successor.

When they made Muschamp the HC-in waiting, I thought they expected Mack to retire within the decade or they wanted to give Muschamp a "promotion" as an excuse to give him more money to keep him for a few more years before another school came calling.

I really don't think Mack will retire in the next 5 years, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a big-name program buyout Muschamp's contract in the next year or two. If UT can figure out their offensive issues, it is a premier job that Muschamp might wait for b/c they will always be loaded with talent.

Do you think if UGA came calling with the exact same salary but the immediate chance to be a head coach that he would wait? I'm not so sure that he would.

I was watching a good portion of the Red River Rivalry game and seeing Mack in camera, he just looked tired and very uncomfortable  Perhaps he and Urban can compare therapy session notes

And another strike against the whole "head coach in waiting" deal.

I'm not a fan of it, and hope that Alabama will not employ that tactic. Hire the best when it's time to make a hire.

My guess is when they made that deal they thought Mack would get his NC and then retire but we foiled that and now that things are imploding in the program, they may start turning the screws.

Mack is the same age as Saban...he's not retiring anytime soon; he's about twenty years younger (maybe more) than Bowden was when he retired. He just looks old. Texas is gonna lose Muschamp you watch.

OP had it right. Consider the source. This is roughly equivalent to someone at Auburn saying that they have inside information that Saban is getting pushed out. I'm not going to bank on it.

I too believe Muschamp will be long gone before Mack Brown retires, but I am frequently wrong about such things. :D Georgia may be the able to lure him away from recruiting paradise. Tennessee obviously couldn't though.

IF this does happen I think Muschamp would try to install a Pro Set offense more along the lines of what we have and coach defense much like Saban does. This would wreak havoc in the Big 12 right now.

OK, what part of this makes any sense...

Coach wins title in 2005. Wins Big 12 in 2009. Plays for two titles in that five year period. Shared the Big 12 South title in 2008, and lost the tie breaker due to being ranked lower in BCS Standings.

But, let's move him out so that our hot young coordinator can take over.

It is only about 10% different than us considering asking Saban to retire so Kirby Smart can be our head coach. If Brown wants to retire, that's a whole new ballgame, and it would be ideal to do it now...

If it's true, it doesn't make any sense. However, it also wouldn't surprise me. Mack's UT team has now lost three of their last six, I believe. They came within a second of losing four of their last seven.

We should know all about fans who get spoiled and start complaining. I've heard Bama fans complaining about coaches, players, games that are too easy, games that are too tough, etc. Look at Georgia right now. Richt, admittedly, is having a tough time on the field and off, but he has two SEC titles and a number 2 finish just a couple of years ago. Should he go? Many believe he should, but what coach are they going to get who has a couple of SEC titles and a number 2 finish on his resume?

What if Muschamp doesn't make it as a head coach? I'm not saying he won't, but just because you have success doing one aspect of the game doesn't mean you will be as successful in another aspect.

Perhaps Major Applewhite can be their next HC in waiting.

:eek2: What? Wasn't he going to be our HC in waiting just two years ago? We had to wrap him up before someone came in and made him a HC offer.

The HC in waiting thing is a bad idea. People can get swept up in one good performance or hype and make a bad decision.

One wouldn't tend to think Muschamp's stock was up all that much after that ridiculous loss to a less than stellar UCLA offense.

The story has been (among some of my friends who are Texas alums) that when Delos Dodds (TX AD) retires, his job will by taken by Mack Brown. Dodds is in his 70's so he could leave relatively soon. Mack is the consumate fund raiser and has taken over many of the speaking engagements that were originally handled by the AD. Mack has the support of Daryl Royal for the job, that would be like a blessing from Coach Bryant.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

Now take a breath and think.

Your coach won a National Championship less than five years ago, and played again for the National Championship less than a year ago, and it's now time to force his retirement because they got upset in one game by UCLA and because they got an incredibly unlucky break on the punt fumble at the end of the game against an outstanding Oklahoma team?

Please.

Makes no sense to me to replace a proven winner with the defensive coordinator who allowed opposing offenses to score an average of 30 points a game in two straight losses.

Maybe I'm just stupid. Maybe I think common sense, still makes sense.

If I'm Brown, I'm having a meeting with Muschamp, and if his butt doesn't get better in a hurry, I'm buying his plane ticket to Georgia, because he no longer qualifies as my defensive coordinator at Texas.

But this is 2010, and nothing makes sense to me anymore....so whatever..

It's Mack Brown's fault. He hired the defensive coordinator..

So if the defensive coordinator he hired doesn't work out...you fire the head coach that hired him and replace him with the defensive coordinator he hired that didn't work out.

Texas now enters the Dubose zone...excuse me....twilight zone.

We'll welcome you back into the national picture in 12-13 years or so..

Have a good time in between.

sip
