Question: Potential hires for the new offensive coordinator?

Here's a name out of left field: Frank Cignetti, currently the OC/QB coach at Rutgers. Just finished up his first season there, and the results this year aren't staggering (in fact, they had one of the worst rushing offenses in FBS this season at 92 ypg). However, there's the obvious connection with the Cignetti family - Curt is his younger brother - and Frank has a wealth of experience in both college and the NFL. His 2009 offense at Pitt averaged 32 ppg, and in 2008 his California offense averaged 33 ppg. He directed back-to-back offenses at Fresno State that finished in the top 10 nationally in total offense in 2004 & 2005. He's also worked with the 49ers, the Saints and the Chiefs at the NFL level. Philosophically, his offense is typically pretty similar to what we have run for the last four seasons. I'm purely speculating here, but this guy seems like a prototypical Saban hire and there are a lot of things about him that fit the mold very well.

Bama being the premiere football program in America you'd think we could get anybody we wanted but looking down teams that have recently hired new head coaches and who might be immediately available http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/brohm_jeff00.html how about from Illinois Jeff Brohm? Might be a good prospect and could be looking. Worked under Petrino. Has had success developing QB's.

I would think after the LSU game because focus is on that game and that game only, with some recruiting trips in between. So currently, there is little time for coach searching and interviewing. I do think, however, we will know shortly thereafter due to recruiting. This is of course an important decision to make and some dedicated time is needed to make the right choice. I predict we will know who our new OC is around Jan. 15-20 unless we promote from within which I see we will know that prior to the BCSNCG.

Good point...although it is possible that he has a short list in his mind already. I was about to post that maybe he will get someone at the AFCA convention. But I just looked and the AFCA convention and that is the exact same time as the title game. Who plans it that way? I am sure a lot of coaches will be in New Orleans then instead of at the conference.

ALSO Curt was the receivers coach under Saban at Alabama until this season.

I agree with a lot of what you say. I think it is time for Alabama to take some of these talented QB recruits and put them to good use. With a running back like Trent causing defenses to crowd the line of scrimmage, there should be open receivers all over the field. I have just not seen the QB development that I expect. When you look back at the classic U of Miami teams, they had a great defense, solid running game, and Heisman Trophy QB's. I see no reason not to have all the components of a great team when you are the top recruiting team in the nation.

I understand the desire to see a more aggressive and higher flying offense, I really do. The thing is I think you're really selling the defenses in the league short when you say it's all lack of qb development or talent. Now I am not saying we couldn't develop that position anymore at all, but the defenses have a part in it. There is a reason guys like Herbstreit just say, "wow" when they watch the coverage in this league. Other than the occasional missed assignment or a player slipping you will very seldom see the wide open passes you see in the Big 10, 12 or Pac 12. I watch those games sometimes and wonder why we can't get guys to do that as well, then I realize it's because there is a defender in his face step for step with him all the way down the field.

I still like Lazor. I think he has done a great job in a short time at UVA. However, I do wonder about the dynamic between him and Groh. The guy is going to be a hot commodity after UVA beats the barn. I think we should be getting in on him now.

Seth Littrell, former OC @ Arizona. I know he is a Stoops/Leach disciple but, he might be a good fit to open up the offense while keeping the ball control Saban preaches.

The problem with McDaniels is that he would not be a guy that would be in it for the long haul. 2-3 years max for JM and he is looking for a new head job at a high profile school or back in the NFL...

Isn't that kind of what you want though? A guy who's going to work his butt off in an attempt to be successful and advance his career? Not saying I like mcDaniels, but someone who has higher aspirations than being an OC isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Can't think of his name, but check out Toledo's OC. Incredible run the last few years and a great young recruiter. Hope he gets a look.
