So, starting OL player (Peacock) takes a girl's wallet, uses her debit card to buy less than $40 worth of gas, and is arrested with the debit card and her driver's license in his possession. He is charged with a felony due to the theft of the debit card.

The question is whether he should be summarily dismissed from the team, or not.

What would your coach do if this had been an Alabama player? Examples?

Appreciate your input.

Not alot of details there but if I were the coach I would likely cut ties with him if admitted or found guilty. The coach likely has more information and a better understanding of who the kid is. The choice his coach makes is not for me to judge. I do hope the actions taken are strong enough to change the kids view on right and wrong while also making a statement to the team about how their actions can and will impact not only their future but also the future of the team as a whole.

T Rey, I haven't heard that he has been in trouble before. I have the same attitude you do - it's Coach Petrino's decision, and he knows the kid (who is not really a "kid" - he's 23).

LP, based on those facts alone, I say yes. Stealing is stealing and he should be gone. How can anyone trust this loser in the future?

I would hope he was dismissed and charged and prosecuted to the max. No excuses for theft and debit card use. None...

And the school should dismiss him and not give the coach any option to keep him. My guess is that will happen if felony conviction. But should happen even if he pleads it down.

I'd hold off and wait for more details. This almost certainly sounds like a misunderstanding or angry girlfriend scenario. <40 $ should not be a felony, even with a Credit/Debit card. I have personally in the past used other peoples cards with their knowledge and had to pose as them to be able to use it (ala sign their name/ enter their pen.) This could have been charged as a crime even though i don't believe it is. Spirit of the Law vs Letter of the Law and all that.

All that said, Wait for info, 95% sure the GF is just being a huge *****. I'd probably give the kid who has never been in trouble before a 2nd chance with a short leash. Once is an accident, Twice is a Coincedence, Thrice is a pattern.

Edit; Just noticed it says girl and not GF, I'm gonna think FB until i'm told otherwise.

More details: Pretty sure wallet was not taken from a GF. Wallet was found in a men's room in (I think) a campus building (they didn't say "dorm" or "apartment"). Don't know if cash also taken, but the driver's license was missing, along with the debit card. Theory is that he took the driver's license to try to conceal the identity of the owner of the wallet if it was found. Dumb, dumb, dumb, and so disappointing.

Suspend him for a season and try to help just bc it's his first time in trouble. If he puts one toe out of line he's gone, but don't charge him with a felony. Making him a felon would pretty much remove him from society, That is not what should be done here. I'm fine with paying the money back, a hefty fine, and 30 days in county. Anything more is overkill.

Also just noticed he's a Senior. RS him if possible (1 yr suspension), if not. Sit down face to face, with him, suspend him for a min. of 4 games max 5.

The only two felonies I can remember under Saban were Jimmy Johns and Jeremy Elder both were removed from the team. Saban would do the same in this case. Have to work really hard to rationalize this one to keep him aboard.

He "only" spent 40 dollars because he got caught and showed poor judgement even as a thief by using a stolen card. If it had taken longer he would have inevitably spent more of her money, dont let the dollar amount distract from you. Using someone else's card and possessing their ID is identity theft plain and simple.

Yep, the identify theft is what made it a felony. Can't really argue with any of your points. It will be interesting to see what CBP does. He has dismissed other players for less.

The amount of money isn't felony grade but the possession of a person's debit/credit card and a state identification card is a felony. Identity theft has become a serious issue and I'm sure the punishments are no joke either. I find it unlikely he's on the team anymore. He could be serving time in jail this Fall anyway.

Kids make mistakes. I hate the thought that he might have thrown away his best shot at a comfortable life. Hopefully he is really repentant and gets another chance.
