Question: What should be done to fill the student section?

I know the University is trying with the "3 point" rule but it is not working.

Should they scale back the ticket allotment?

Should they open up the Greek section or move them up top?

Should they open up sales of general admission in the student section mid-way in the first quarter?

I think the lack of student support at the games for this team is downright embarrassing.

If they use the UD, then they have to make separate tix for the lower bowl and the UD. Too many students pack into the lower bowl.

They should utilize the point system currently in place that penalizes students for not using their tickets. They should make any student who leaves early (say prior to 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter) scan out with their ACT card and assign them a certain point amount. If you reach your penalty limit early in the season, the rest of your tickets are revoked and opened to students who missed out. If you reach that point too late in the season, you lose them for next year.

Also, I feel they should cut out at least one, maybe two, sections in the upper deck. I would also suggest limiting the number of students in the lower bowl and opening up unused tickets to general admission after kick-off.

I really don't see what it matters. Those people are in the stadium (just in the lower bowl). They paid for the seats. Why are there no threads complaining about people who stand on the ramps to the upper deck instead of sitting in their seats?

I don't think the UD student section has been more than 1/2 full since the LSU game last year. My thought is you just reduce the student ticket allotment and sell those to TidePride

I am just so disappointed by that upper deck as well ... obviously Saban has noticed it as well per his comments at the Saban show this last week.

The students all pack themselves into the lower deck .. which I totally understand. I also understand it is difficult to pack the stadium for those smaller games ... But no excuse for an SEC game at all!!! It looks really bad to have that section continually look bare, especially considering this last weekend was a big game!

TAKE AWAY the block seating! Drives me crazy!!!! Or put it in the upper deck! They don't show up half the time and when they do, they leave early!

I don't know the answer ...
Knowing how many people are on the wait list ... give those to Tide Pride.

The tickets are getting used. They just need to "renumber" the seats in the lower student section so more students can "fit" and reduce the area in the upper deck. I don't think it is wise to limit the loudest contingent in the stadium.

Complain but the students are still much louder than all other sections. Plus it is mostly the greeks that leave they should be moved to the top. Get rid of the greeks and the bottom will be full. Plus remember we (students) have to get to the game around 2 hours ahead of time to get seats and when you are up by 30 by half a lot of them are hot and burned from the sun or cold and leave because they have been in the stands for about 4 hours by then.

My friends and stay the whole game and every game and so do most of the students in the lower non greek area.

This topic comes up every year. The other seats leave early and do not show up unless it is big games. It is a two way street.

This has always been a problem as long as I can remember, but it is getting worse. Even coach Saban commented on the fan base not getting into the game and doing their part. There are two Tide Pride seats next to mine that only get used at the big games

I'm sensing that our fans are getting a sense of entitlement. The majority of the stadium doesn't get loud until the other team crosses into Bama territory. I do my part the entire game no matter who Bama is playing, but i'm realizing that we will never have a roudy stadium like LSU or Florida.

All I can say is those good seats should not go UNUSED!

I would love to put my backside in any of them.

i haven't been to a game in years, but i don't remember us ever having the most animated crowds. i had some friends who came to town comment that we were the most passive crowd they'd ever seen at a "big time" football game.

The southeast upper deck is always empty and our stadium should be packed by fans who want to attend the games. I would be happy to purchase three season tickets for this section as would many more. I am tired of seeing it empty in person but it pains me when this section shows up on a nationally televised game. If it is true that these are empty because the students are packing in the lower section then isn't this in violation of fire/safety code? The stadium needs to be filled, that recruit doesn't see an unfilled student section. He sees empty seats.

Exactly...going back to what I said about our fans having a sense of entitlement. The number one team in the nation should have a full stadium.

They will probably not implement a scan out system. Sometimes too much control is just too much. Is the money required to pay someone to secure scan outs worth it? Personally, I don't think students should be held in a glorified prison either. Why should they be held to a different standard than general admission when they already invest more time in securing good seats?

I do think something should be done but it shouldn't be basically imprisioning spectators.

First you must show that the students really aren't there. Just because the seat is empty, doesn't mean that person is not in the stands (lower bowl, concourse, ramps, etc.). Anyway, putting students, who are the one's the game is really for and about, in the upper bowl is really absurd.

I'm not looking to start a flame war, and I understand who mostly pays for the incredible stadium, but we need to keep the main thing in mind, which is this game is played by students for students, the rest of us are guests at the games. There are more people than seats, but pushing the students out of the stadium is not the answer. Forcing them to sit in their assigned seat is not a great answer either. But, block seating stinks too. Good luck changing the block seating...

At least a few fraternities lost their block seating in the recent hazing scandal. There are way more students in the lower bowl than there are seats. My guess is that if you made the upper deck all Tide Pride it would mostly be full. I know one reason they do official block seating is because of trouble before that between "groups" and "non-group" students when the former tried to save seats for their friends and the latter felt like if there was an open seat, then they should sit in it -- first come first served. And you end up with a fist fight. But I agree it is time to revisit the idea. You just can't continue to have entire sections of empty seats at kick off. Doesn't just look bad, it is bad. And it's costing the University money. My guess is that as usual, the students will get squeezed, but this time they can't say they didn't bring it on themselves.
