Jeff Long just said the committee would take suspensions into account

I don't think anyone is really surprised, but that's absolutely horrible. So I guess that includes targeting suspensions? Even suspensions over violations of NCAA rules?

The committee and then the additional criteria is just such a horrible idea. I'm not sure they could have come up with a much worse way of doing this. Is it so hard to just rank the top teams? Do you have to poison the results with things like missing players and conference champions?

I guess I don't get it. Suspensions in what sense? Player suspensions for on the field infractions? I don't see where that anything to do with overall team performance. Utterly ridiculous.

I don't either, but when the announced the criteria (each of which is an opportunity for a biased committee member to make a ridiculous vote) they said they would take injured players into account. Some here speculated when Winston was suspended that they would take that into account as well. They asked that Jeff Long point blank and he responded that they would take suspensions into account.

He didn't elaborate further, but clearly it's a Pandora's Box sort of scenario. Once they opened that door by saying they'll take missing players into account, there's no real way to close it. Anyone who wants to will try to excuse a loss by looking at the depth chart and point out who was missing for that game.

It depends how heavily they weigh suspensions and/or injuries. I agree it's kinda of ridiculous to take them into account in any capacity. But they may take them into account but it may be weighed very little..

They do this in basketball. Injuries and suspensions. So we take the second most popular sport in America (behind the NFL) and try to make it more like a sport whose popularity has declined steadily over the last 2 decades. Brilliant.

That makes it a little clearer to me now. I thought, at first, it meant a team could be penalized for having players suspended. But it sounds more liken they may be given the benefit of the doubt if they're missing a star player for a game.

That said, it's still ridiculous. There's now way you can determine a player's impact to game that he doesn't participate in. They might lose the game anyway. A player suspension should be a null factor.

Well, the problem is that each committee member will determine how they weigh it for themselves. For instance, I saw one person say that the conference champion criteria would only be used as a tie breaker, however, I saw another say it was important (and the documentation tends to mention it first). So, the main issue I have with any criteria beyond judging the team's performance, is that it gives a committee member a ready excuse for any sort of absurdity. I believe there will be some voters for instance that strongly advocate for conference champs, and others who just vote for the top four. The issue of course is that all should just vote for the top 4.

I'd say we won't see how it really works until the end of the season, but the truth is we'll never see how it works. It's all behind closed doors, secret ballots from what I understand. If 2 or 3 guys in the room want to decide that a three loss team gets their vote because a QB was hurt or what ever silliness they come up with, there is absolutely nothing in place to stop that, or expose that. I do think most members will behave rationally, but it's basically the size of a jury. It doesn't take much to impact the outcome.

Way to make these young men learn from their mistakes. Get suspended and it doesn't hurt your team's chances??

That is ridiculous and will just continue to show these kids that they can do what they want.

Just another dumb idea coming from the dumbest idea in college football (the committee). I really hope the committee royally screws up and we just go with the top 4 from the bcs in a year or two.

Selection committee will be disaster. They each have their own agenda. It's too small of a group to overcome several members strong biases. Then throw in the fact that all members votes are kept secret....this just leads to abuse and favoritism.

Just suspend one of your best players before every big game. Did he say anything about how bad FSU plays defense? . They are getting carved up right now. Maybe there will consideration for playing in Carter Finley stadium the game after your best player was suspended when your opponent dresses in all red and the game starts at 3:30 eastern. .????

I agree, I can understand taking injuries into account as that can't be helped but suspensions? We all know FSU would have gotten a bye if they lost last week but the reason Winston wasn't playing is because he is an ignorant moron that should have been suspended a long time ago. FSU shouldn't get a bye because they let him do whatever he wants until he makes the school president mad.

Since the whole committee process is completely subjective, they can say they can take anything into account. The only thing that matters is how much it will be taken into account. A member who wants FSU in the top 4 will put them there unless the team starts losing games.

I just don't think anything should be taken into account except results on the field. No coulda shoulda wouldas.

EXACTLY!!!

Isn't football supposed to be a team game? I thought that meant everybody. When your starter goes down, for whatever reason, someone's gotta step up. That's why it's called a team.
