And how many are currently on NFL rosters? That's how we were able to do it.

It's an area of improvement no doubt. Auburn did what we didn't do - quick passes. That's why the pass rush was negated. Stidham didn't hold the ball long.

Far easier said than done. D line guys of the Jonathan Allan variety only come along once in a great while. They are like gold.

I think a lot of our pass rush was hindered by the linebacker injuries. While it's great to have athletically gifted defensive ends, I think coming into this year we knew that the pressure was going to have to come from our linebackers. Unfortunately, that's the area that we were killed in as far as injuries.

Well, we didn't really get schooled. We just didn't executed the gaps, the assignments, and other stuff very well. Do it right and Bama wins. It's really about poor execution on Defense.

Playcalling was atrocious. Execution was poor.

This year we bottomed out in pass rush, Next year should be better, but not outstanding. For all the trouble we have had we have several experienced outside guys coming back, the inside suddenly looks amazing with Mac Wilson and Mosley, Then there is Chris Allen who is apparently a freak but was just not quite ready for prime time and Anfernee Jennings got better all year and Miller and Lewis will return to hopefully become the dynamic duo we hoped they would be this year.

Then at DL I believe Raekwon Davis might be one of the top linemen in college football next year. LeBryan Ray was coming on strong when he got hurt. I'm hoping we can keep Buggs, He could be a very high draft pick if he could put together a full season the way he finished up. I actually think Payne would benefit in returning because his pass rush still needs work and that's what they value most in the NFL but I'm sure he will bail.

We definitely need to sign some game ready freshman on the DL.

Schooled isn't the right adjective. We schooled Ole Miss and Vandy. We defeated Tennessee soundly and we controlled the game against LSU. (obviously just my opinions on how those different adjectives fit our performance.)

I'd say Auburn controlled the game against us. But if anything we tripped over our own feet a few times and had the wrong game plan on offense going in.

It's easy to get into the weeds but overall I'd say we're a few healthy players and 1 different gameplan away from walking into our 4th consecutive SEC championship game.

Too much doom and gloom for my taste.

Before all of our injuries to Linemen we had the ability to pass rush. It takes speed. We lost a step with unfamiliar guys coming in the line. We lost our Field General too and that hurt.

Tim Williams was a linebacker, right? With Saban's D the rush you seek comes largely from LBs.

The reason Bama did not do this versus Auburn exploiting the quick passing game was that Auburn knew we would be blitzing LB's and voiding certain areas of the field, especially on third downs, due to the fact that our 3 to 4 down linemen could not consistently generate a pass rush. To create a pass rush, Bama has to blitz from somewhere. Credit Auburn and Stidham for diagnosing where the blitz was coming from and when it was coming. Also, Auburn had no trouble all season with rushing the quarterback with their front 4. Just Like Bama last season. Its a luxury Bama simply didn't have this season after the injuries to Miller and Lewis. So, Auburn didn't leave as many voided areas in the defense by needing to blitz LB's. A quick passing game would've helped Bama at some points during the game, but I'm not sure it would have been the difference.

Not really. Allen has been the exception. Of the top 10 season sack stats under saban, only three are DL. Two of them belong to Allen (1st and tied for 2nd) and Dareus is 10th. All the rest are LBs like Anderson, Williams, Dickson and Upshaw. The last three years, the LB's have contributed more sacks than the DL also, even though it's been close a couple of years.

The defensive ends though have a lot more to do with sacks than the numbers recorded. Pressure on the ends forcing the qb or breakdown of the play allows the linebackers to have a field day in the middle, if you're using blitz packages, then that is especially designed for linebacker sacks. We even use our linebackers as defensive end hybrids , so it really has a lot to do.with how you are using your defensive schemes. When I played college football, our coach would always award nonsacks to the guys who forced the play into a resulting sack. It was kind of an unofficial acknowledgment of a play or player.
