LSU/MSU Defenses Compared to Barn/Dawgs and Beyond

Michigan of late can Clemson better than Clemson ever could. I'm still guessing they'll drop another one before the playoffs. OSU is certainly capable.

Northwestern came very close to beating them earlier this year. If Michigan beats Ohio State, Northwestern gets a second shot at them.

You know, we've played better D's the last two and the Barn and Georgia will provide a test too, but we haven't been the same on offense since Smitty got hurt. Don't believe he caught a pass today, other than one that I remember.

Did MSU play us with two safeties today? I know we didn't take many deep shots today, but if you can pressure like MSU did with its DL, you can take away alot more from Tua with the back seven.

They played with 2 high Safeties almost the whole game. They were determined to not give up a deep ball and keep everything underneath.

The frustrating part is that once Deonte went out we absolutely could not run the ball.

Yet for some reason we started a lot of series with a 1st down run that got zip and it put us behind the chains in 2nd and 3rd and long situations.

Then they pinned their ears back and came after Tua and our O-Line and Rb's played Matador like Chris Capps and let Tua just get pasted multiple times.

If he didn't get hit he was running for his life to try and extend plays.

It was absolutely embarrassing imo. The OL pass blocking has been good to great all year and they have been credited for that so it's only fair to say they got WHIPPED last night by a bunch of 3-stars.

It's mindblowing that Deonte made that much of a difference because we were GASHING them running the ball before he got knocked out the game.

We were patient passing too with Tua taking what they were giving him underneath for the most part. Looked like we were prepared to kill them by 1,000 cuts tonight if need be but boy did that strategy unravel after losing Deonte.

I'm just at a loss for words. I mean MSU's defense IS good..... but they in no way should have been able to hold us to under HALF of our Total Yardage Average and PPG average.

I don't want it to sound like I'm not giving MSU any credit though. I'm just saying our offense is 4 and 5 Star players all over the place and MSU is mostly 3-stars with a few 4's and after it was 21-0 they DOMINATED us. Completely out-schemed us and out coached us and out played us.

I'm glad we won..... I really am....but getting manhandled like that by their D is really just inexcusable.

Let's not forget this is our annual "game after LSU" game. We were worn out both physically and emotionally. Hopefully this week will be somewhat of a recovery week before our next two games.

Also, I'm not sure we'll face both Mich and Clemson. If things keep going like they are I expect us to play ND and then the Clemson/Mich winner. Of course I'm assuming we win out.

Inexcusable is dramatic . . . disappointing maybe. Teams have nine games of film, now ten, to figure out how to defense Bama, and with a QB on a gimpy leg and no apparent change in play calling, defensive calls become predictable.
At the same time, our defense has developed into an excellent unit, pitching consecutive shutouts against two ranked conference teams.

The season is long and you're going to see ups and downs. This rough patch on offense should serve the team well in the playoffs. And Harris not scoring at the end of the game will be a defining moment for the offensive line as it moves forward.

Very good possibility a couple of those two or three stars you speak of might go in the first round of the draft....

Miss St. is by far the best defense we'll see regular season or playoffs IMHO. Unlike LSU you have a fierce front 7 and a decent back-end but the biggest difference between the way their DB's played versus LSU and everyone else is they weren't as arrogant in believing they could cover our receivers and shut them down. They stayed close and limited the run after catch production we've feasted on with everyone else.

Even with all that we had our third string QB in for part of the 3rd and all of the fourth quarter. They knew all they had to do was bring down their safeties and blitz, blitz, blitz. However, we were still on our way to scoring a final TD that would have made the score 31-0 but as usual Coach Saban let the air out and was trying to run clock to get the game over.

Auburn has a good pass rush but are suspect when you run it right at them and they don't have the kind of DB's to keep up with our receivers. Georgia on the other hand is fairly solid defensively but doesn't standout in any one area.

As for Clemson or anyone else we play, I would hope that we're about as close to 100% as we've been since the start of the season. If that's the case I don't see any defense capable of shutting us down.

I just think we played the two best defenses we will face. Yes, the barn and Georgia have good defenses, but I don't think they are as good as LSU and State. Plus, from what I've seen in the past, when we have issues like we had against State, they are corrected the next time we see that type of defense. I trust Coach Saban to handle it.

People better start talking up Clemsons defense because their front 4 is sick nasty and probably the best in the country.

Sophomores vs seniors

This is something that many do not consider. Yes, our sophomores and freshmen are four and five star guys. They are very talented, but they have had it easy this year. State punched us in the mouth as the game wore on, and we didn't seem to handle it well. I think we needed a game like that. I'm just glad that we started well so we had the big cushion in the second half. I'm glad we were able to get the lesson without having to sweat out a game with only a one score lead. Having so many guys leave for the NFL takes away the experience that we would otherwise have. I know some are talking about this team being considered one of the best of all time, and we are certainly super talented, but we shall see if we develop the toughness and championship mettle that will be needed to win any titles. I'm looking forward to watching how we develop because I already think we are the most dominant dynasty in history, so I would like to see us add another team or two to the greatest of all time discussion.

First, why? What fans say does not impact the game. It is better to believe than worry.

Second, Alabama has 36 sacks so far this year - same as Clemson. Care to guess which defense has faced tougher offensive lines? Yes, Clemson gets after the QB, but Tua and Jalen will both be 100% for that game, and you beat that same front 4 with Jalen at QB last year.

The only team that worries me is Michigan. That defense is good from front to back, sideline to sideline. More importantly - they are playing with an attitude. IMO, that is one defense that will hurt your QB to win the game.

Georgia is the game that scares me the most. Not because I think they are better than Michigan or Clemson but because we will likely be healthier in the playoffs than the SECCG.

I would agree with you on Michigan. Defensively they seem to be playing as well aa anyone. And they look much better on offense than they did early in the year. I expect them to win out. Assuming a Bama victory over UGA, they should be in.

As to MSU’s defensive, there are at least four 4-5 star players in their front seven. Most of them seniors. That was a skilled and experienced front we faced. Is that excuse for our poor play on the oline? No, but let’s also give it some proper context.

I know LSU's defense had a great defensive backfield and weaker DL, but even though Tua was rarely hit against LSU, their DBs clearly affected our passing game.

I know that MSU's defense had a better DL and that seemed to be the greatest impact on the game, but I wonder if MSU's secondary also was just has good as LSU's or at least not far behind.

Alot of those sacks/hits on Tua were simply because there were no receivers open against MSU...commonly called a coverage sack.

Then, a few times, they just brought the house and it was a numbers issue and we couldn't block them...and that's either on Tua for not recognizing it, throwing it away OR on Locks for not getting us out of that play into somethat that would work.

Well to be fair to our receivers, a big problem is Tua, Locks/Enos, or a combination of the the two parties played extremely greedy. The out routes, quick slants, and corner routes were open all day, but we kept trying to go for the home run play that takes time to develop. The problem was we didn’t have time because MSU didn’t allow Tua to have time for those chunk plays to happen.

Did anyone else notice how CNS smiled a little and chuckled when he mentioned that this was the first time Alabama had faced any adversity on offense (during the post-game interview with Jamie Erdahl)? Methinks the O-line and and RB’s will be receiving some extra special personal attention this week.

And the quick wideout screens too! I noticed we didn't take the easier stuff too.

Many have commented this was Locks worse game as a play caller.

It would have been different if we kept pushing the envelope to test Tua IF HE WASN'T GETTING HIT, but at some point you've got to adjust and take what they are giving you.

After Brown went out and our run game suffered, we should have just nickle and dimed them to death with short, quick passes but it seems we never adjusted.
