This is, unfortunately, not as surprising as it should be. Alabama, in particular (though not alone), has a problem with poor safety maintenance. A similar thing happened at the school where my sister works in AL, though not during any school activity. The state needs to inspect these goals and determine if a certain type/model has this problem or just what the problem is. Very fortunate no one was badly hurt or killed.

Whatever. My sister works at an elementary school and one of these fell overnight there a while back. Alabama is not inspecting these goals and keeping them up. If this continues to happen a kid will die or be badly injured.

Summer league game @ Samford in 1973 -- Reginald "Mule' King went up for a dunk, bent/broke the rim in half...shattered the backboard...end of the game. I watched it all...just had to laugh.

If it hits someone coming down OR if that catches somebody on the way down and then up it could have flung them 20 feet in the air possibly seriously injuring or killing them. That's crazy!
