ACC Football after week 8

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

fsu might not win another game.
The very first Alabama football game I attended in person was Alabama versus Georgia Tech in 1981. The Yellowjackets squeezed out a narrow victory against Alabama and then the Yellowjackets did not win another game all season. Every week I would look at the scores and think, "Come on guys win at least one other game."

And that Alabama team won a share of the SEC title. Seems like they went on to lose to Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 14-12.

Everybody keeps comparing this Alabama team to the 2015 Alabama team, but maybe this team is 2014 Ohio State. That team lost to a terrible ACC team, but went on to win a national championship. Hopefully we won't also have 2 QBs go down too.
Don’t put that stuff out there. :)

It's great to see GA tech doing well. They've always been a second team for me.
Funny because GT is no longer in the SEC due to bad blood between GT and Bama in the 60s. Bobby Dodd wanted out with his own little fiefdom. Heck, they are in our fight song!

But I actually pull for them to play spoiler in the ACC and against Georgia all the time. And I did like watching their Wing T offense under whatshisface the Georgia Southern guy. Who sole still say should have been hired instead of Saban"

I dated a Tech girl for a couple of years. She was hawt and fun for a while but ultimately a liar and cheater. I hated Tech for a while after that. Now I work with Tech grads and they are good people and pull for Alabama for my sake, so I reciprocate.

Yeah I actually have nothing against Tech, just think it’s funny that they used to be such a heated rival.

As a one-time engineering student, I really like their “rambling wreck from Georgia Tech and Hell of an engineer!” Alternate fight song.

The one bright spot for Georgia Tech in that first year under... Bill Curry!

I was in the 7th grade. There used to be a show that aired on WTBS on Saturday nights called "Football Saturday on TBS," it came on right after wrassling or a Braves loss. They'd generally go over the college football results and preview the next day's NFL game. Anyway, Norm Van Brocklin was sitting there when they came back from a break and with a look of glee on his face and an Alabama pennant, that he proceeded to crumple and sneer, and the entire audience (remember, the show was live in Atlanta) cheered loudly.

I hated Van Brocklin so much for that that when he croaked less than two years later, I was happy. Yeah, I was a stupid 13-year-old. Then again, I didn't know at the time that he had been the Tech RBs coach under Pepper Rodgers in 1979, so okay, him pulling for Tech was reasonable.

But it felt like a hard kick in the guts to me at 11. I'll look at the box score shows that we lost obviously because of turnovers. We had the yardage on them, 384-262, but I am guessing seven penalties for 84 yards means we had a couple of spot fouls for pass interference.

Not only that but look at this going into the bowls:

AP POLL
1) Clemson - only unbeaten
2) Georgia - only loss to Clemson, 13-3
3) Alabama - loss to Tech, 24-21, and 13-13 tie with USM
4) Nebraska - 9-2, losses to Big 10 champ Iowa (10-7) and Penn St (30-24)
5) SMU - 10-1, on probation and ineligible for bowls (and thus ineligible for UPI poll)
6) Texas - 9-1-1 - loss to Arkansas (42-11), and tie with Houston (14-14)
7) Penn State - losses to Miami (17-14) and Alabama (31-16 in a game they trailed, 24-3)
8) USC - losses to Arizona (13-10) and Washington (13-3)
9) Miami - losses to Texas (14-7) and Miss St (14-10)
10) Pitt - one loss, 48-14, to Penn State while #1 (which is why Penn St is ranked above Miami)

UPI POLL
Top 4 is the same
5) Texas
6) Penn St
7) USC
8) Pitt
9) N Carolina
10) Washington - 9-2

We see again how STUPID the poll rankings were even in 1981. Penn State over Miami is defensible solely because it was a three-point loss on the road and they'd just routed #1 Pitt, in effect making up for the narrow loss.

But how is NEBRASKA ahead of Penn State, who beat them IN LINCOLN?
How is SMU ahead of Texas?
And how is USC ahead of Washington, who won the conference and beat USC by ten?

OK, the last one is defensible. Washington only had 120 yards of total offense and 8 first downs, but they kicked a go ahead field goal with 2:29 left - and then recovered the following kickoff in the end zone for a TD. It WAS a fluke win and it was at home.

===============================

The point?

Alabama went into the bowl games with a chance to win the national championship despite a loss to 1-10 Georgia Tech. If Nebraska beat Clemson and then Pitt beat Georgia - while Alabama beat Texas - then the Tide would have won another championship.

We blew a 10-0 fourth quarter lead in the Cotton Bowl.
Pitt did win, 24-20, when Dan Marino drilled a 33-yard zinger on fourth down into the end zone.
But Clemson won anyway, but we would have been #2.

Bring UNC and UVa to the SEC and the conference folds. If UNC were to be SEC the school would have to build a 100,000 seat stadium within five years. Incredible market and a prestigious school.
Same with UVa about the market and prestige. Forget the 100,000 seats, though. Well, maybe not.
