New OL Coach - Who would You Hire???

This might be a little far afield, but just reviewing the current situation.

Alabama only has 5 scholarship running backs at the moment. two in, three out. They are basically saying they really like the guys they have. This also means they're not really blaming the running back room for the struggles last year.

Gillespie was one of the few holdovers on the staff, and has been here for one of the more pronounced downturns in running back production at Alabama. In 5 years he's had one 1,000 yard rusher (Brian Robinson). So if the running backs are not the problem... if he were to clear out this opens up the AHC slot.

On special teams it will basically be all new guys, this might be an endorsement of the special teams coach. Considering they lost a game specifically each of the past two seasons due to special teams blunders, I'd feel better if they made a change here.

Then there's offensive line, as we're discussing. The issue here isn't just run blocking. Alabama was second to last in the SEC in rushing, but also gave up the fourth most sacks. So they didn't run black or pass protect especially well. This with multiple NFL players, seems something is amiss here.

Of the three coaches though, Kap is the most valuable as he is a good recruiter. He's Alabama's top recruiter, so I think you have to consider how you keep him. Gillespie has had some good recruits over the years, but we're comparing someone with 9 recruits over the past two seasons to someone with 2, so if one of the two has to go it's probably Gillespie.

I hope they find a way to keep Kap while shifting enough responsibilities to address both running back development and run blocking.

Move Kap into recruiting

Might as well bring in someone, Nix was a running back, maybe he can get "/running game coordinator" added to his title.

I feel like there should be a change, at best Kap isn't able to get his teaching to translate to the field. Maybe Ty's audibles were an issue and created unnecessary confusion, but the line still lost more one on one battles than they won. At worst, it's all on Kap and he's had two years to do something, and he hasn't.

Heck, bring in Vlachos as an "assistant offensive line coach", get him on the field and in the weight room to make these guys ready to get after it.
When we audibled it seemed like it took way, way too long to to it and we were constantly up against the play clock, which I don't think facilitates success if there is built in stress! And, often the audibles didn't work/help, which makes me wonder about the rumors of relationship issues with Grubb. I wonder if Ty too hard to audible out!
I think he is AOLC at Miami...
I didn't know WV was down there, but as I watched the game last night, it's clear Miami is doing something right with their OL play. Obviously, CMC takes pride in that as a former OL player and position coach, but it made me wonder who else is involved down there?

some of the timing on the audibles was intentional. We often waiting till the headsets were off to start, because that was putting more pressure on the players on the field to adjust since they couldn't get anything from the booth. It worked pretty well early in the season, but tapered off as we went along.

Yes, later in the year, a lot of the plays Ty changed failed at the LOS, which again begs the question of did the OL not block it well OR did Ty audible into a play that wasn't going to work against the defensive alignment? TBH, sometimes it looked like the audible by Ty wasn't a good one.

Or the defense audibled to a play that negated ours?

However unintentional, this (the bolded part) is a very misleading stat. There was a significant difference in games played between SEC programs this season. Alabama was 8th in the SEC (bottom of the upper half of the conference) this year. It’s even more meaningful to calculate “sacks per pass attempt” where Alabama was 5th or possibly 4th (at least after the AU game) in the truer measure of that stat.

So, the reality is that Alabama’s OL was one of the better pass blocking OLs in the SEC this year. It’s probably a little better than that when we factor in the RB responsibilities. E.g., in the first OU game 2 of the 4 sacks were the RBs (1 each for Miller and Hill) responsibility. That is the only game whose stats re: the RBs I know. But I know there were other RB pass blocking failures.

Another observation from just watching on TV, is that most SEC QBs are often under siege by the SEC pass rushers. And that is with the vast majority of the teams having very mobile QBs. Mendoza was sacked twice by Alabama, Ty was not sacked, though Mack was.

Finally, the vast majority of serious football fans think their OLs are terrible and hate their OL coach.

In summary: Alabama’s OL was an above average pass blocking OL, at least related to the rest of the SEC.

I maybe completely wrong, but I'm not convinced there's going to be a change at the OL coaching spot. I have a hunch the staff believes the problem at OL was a player problem and not a coaching problem. I hope im wrong on that.
Sighs.

Ohhhhn you're gonna make the posters mad suggesting Kap should stay . Never mind your logical thought process. They want him gone now! 👀

When I was watching Miami during the game last night, all I could think to myself was "If we had this o-line and RB play, we probably would have run the table."
