Did SOS release a statement late last night?

I heard on the 10:00 news on WAFF 48 out of Huntsville at the end of sports that SOS had just released a statement that he was flattered but wasn't leaving USC. Has anyone else heard this or seen a article?

The guy said that he had just released this statement. If that was true I was thinking that it was kind of late (after 10) to just release this kind of statement. Made me think that he might have really been thinking about it but decided to stay.

If you stop to think about it, we really do not want CSS. Here's why:

  1. He is not hungry enough. He has already accomplished pretty much all he wanted to accomplish at Florida and now is in a "coasting" mode. He is a very fine coach, and at best we would only have him for 10 years.
  2. If hired, everyone would assume him to go undefeated or some similar nonsense from day one. Not going to happen, as with any new coach, the players will have to adapt to the schemes, etc.
  3. Money is no object to him, see the point above.

Now I obviously do not have any sort of inside information and everything I am babbling about is pure speculation, but it does stand to reason that he will retire at South Carolina.

Uh?????????? When you say "we" I'm guessing you got a rat in your pocket because "I" sure as hell want him.

Now now. There are so many ways I could respond, LOL. :)

But my point is that I really do not think that he is interested enough to make the level of commitment it would take to win a couple or three NC's at BAMA.

I'll bet that when these guys release random press statements like that, that they are communicating via the press to the boosters, BOT, or whoever's in charge about the latest offer hoping public sentiment adds more pressure to sweeten the offer.

A couple of responses to this point:
  • He has an ego. He just might be visualizing a bronze statue of himself next to a statue of Bear Bryant.
  • He only has one NC, and no undefeated seasons.
  • If we only have him ten years, that's still more than our last three coaches combined.

I feel that the chances of hiring SOS are slim because he has already "made his money". He seems to have mellowed out (the TV announcers have noticed this as well) and is "coasting" until retirement. Heck is is 61 and doesn't have far to go. He have moved the USC program up a notch and everyone over there is happy.

I can agree with 2 & 3, but I think SOS is one of the most driven coaches out there. With his ego, he would accept nothing less from himself or others!

Anyone that doesn't want Spurrier for the fact that he might get a bronze statue next to Gene and the Bear needs to get their head examined. New Bronze Statue = We just won our 13th National Championship. This is the whole problem with our program at Alabama. PRIDE GETTING IN THE WAY OF WINNING.

I know many of you despise Finebaum, but I like his show and the antics that go with it, he's a great entertainer. Anyway, Finebaum was on the local AM station here in Tallassee this morning and he has talked with Steve Spurrier. He said that Steve was flattered and laughed when Paul told him that he was leading an online poll regarding the coaching position at Alabama. He said don't take his name out of the hat just yet, BUT the university better have a good pitch. He did not feel like money would be the issue, but again the pitch and how they approach him with an offer.

Paul believes that the university can really hit a homerun this time and said that it was poppycock for the national media to downplay the UA coaching job. He felt that it might be easier at UA right now than at AU and even pointed out that AU fans seemed more tolerant even this year with Shula. I believe that was apparent from some on this board as well, so I thought it was a good point. Paul thinks they can be a 9 or 10 win team next year and said that was attractive, plus the possibility of coming in and breaking the streak against Auburn and having a good cushion on that alone. Paul is sometimes crazy on the show (I think that's how he remains sane with the callers that he tolerates), but on interviews like this he can be very informative.

I agree with the money point, but the hungry point I'm not sold on that. I think his antics on the sideline show passion and desire for his kids to be successful more than ever, he still looks like the same UF coach to me. He gets mad and rants and his happiness was very apparent when they beat Clemson. I think your digging too much to say that his hunger is no longer there.

As far as the expectations, I think UA fans have been humbled somewhat this decade thus far and have become tolerant in many ways. I don't see that as a good thing, but the first year will not be that tough on Spurrier IMO as it would be on a Johnson or Grobe if they were to come in and struggle. I think if the latter happened you would be more likely to hear the we should have stuck with Shula line than if Spurrier were to come in and have 7 or 8 wins his first year. I don't agree with you on this point, it's sad but UA expectations have been dumbed down and tolerance levels are at an all time max; not for all fans don't get me wrong, but the more tolerant fan number has increased.

I think the whole dynamic of this university would be changed if Spurrier were to take this job, but we'd have the man and rest assured he'd be given more tolerance in the early going than any other hire.

I wouldn't have any problems with that. And if can win 7 MNC's at Bama, we can plant it on the 50 yardline at BDS. Heck we can even rename the stadium, too! :biggrin2:

I don't think anyone suggested any such thing. I mentioned the statue as a possible motivation for Spurrier to take the job.

I heard Scott Moore last night on Southern Sports Tonight say that "the job is Spurrier's to either take or to turn down". And yes, you need to take everything Scott says with a couple grains of salt, as he can be a bit of a homer.

I'd like to see Spurrier at Bama but I just don't think it will happen (hope I'm wrong). Don't have any inside source or scoop; just a gut feeling.

You are right... love him or hate him, you can get some good information out of Finebaum. We need to have our best salesman pitching Spurrier.
