Worst call ever in a 'Bama game

I was reading a thread about accountability in the SEC officials and of terminations, etc. I got to thinking, what is the worst call you have ever seen an official make (or not make) for or against Alabama?

My vote goes for the, I think, '83 Penn State game at PSU. Walter Lewis had led a furios rally, only to be robbed by an official in the back of the end zone as replays clearly showed our tight end (can't remember his name right now) with full control of the ball and clearly inbounds.

A close second goes to the no-call of pass interference against LSU a couple of years back when the LSU defender shoved Keith Brown (or D.J. Hall?) into the ground with ball on the way. He proceeded to pick the pass and completely change the makeup of that game.

Hey, it's the offseason! I'm bored too!

I would have to go with recent events, as I was not there in person for games before 2001. So, I would go with 2004 LSU and the infamous non-call on the DB push against DJ Hall. My next one would be the spot on the ball at the goal line in the 2005 LSU game. Last, but not least, the fumble call in the 2005 Miss. State game. It didn't cost us the game, but it sure did kill the momentum for an offensive score in that game. I still don't understand the ruling, nor has it occured, to my knowledge, before or since in a game I have watched.

Ah, so many, so sickening. Just a few. Joe Namath scores on a quarterback sneak against Texas in the Orange bowl, bad spot. The next year in the first game in Georgia the bulldogs pull a desperation hook and lateral play near end game where the pass receiver is clearly down before he laterals for the game winning touchdown, a 1 point loss for the eventual National Champions. The Freddie Kitchens touchdown pass late at Auburn that is ruled out of the end zone, even a moron could have gotten this one right. The trapped ball touchdown pass late in Tuscaloosa by Arkansas that gave them a 1 point victory. Enough, I am getting mad again.

The 1983 Penn State game will live in infamy. Preston Gothard was in bounds by a mile. it would be my choice even over the '95 Auburn game in Jordan-Hare or the Orange Bowl in '65.......

Not a moron. It took a good picture to show it was a catch. It looked very close live.

Yep and the 12 men on the field no-call before that (refs got suspended for that).

If you think about it most of the worst calls in Bama history have come in the past 12 years. Well we ve been on probation twice during that time not to mention the inbetween periods of other schools using the "they're going to get hit again" in recruiting situations, along with low level talent, stupid board decisions and coaching revolving doors galore with poor personnel at that.
In my mind the worst call moment that started this horrible trainwreck was the infamous '95 Ark endzone trap in BD stadium. I was there and have never been so livid until the next and the next and so forth. Then came the BD stadium Tenn game where their defense held our receiver or whomever with a no call of 12 men on the field at the most significant point in the game of our march down the field. You could write a book about it.

Other than the Namath Orange Bowl and the Penn St. 82 or whatever it was
weve had our share of crappy calls go against us in every imaginable form and the most seemed to occur at home games of all places. Usually you get the home calls more often than not but not to my long memory at BD stadium. Personally Im sick and tired of not getting a break every once and a while. I constantly hear other sec opp. talk of bad calls here and there and how theyve been screwed. Theyre absolutely right of course because the sec officiating has sucked byond repair for the past 6 to 8 yrs. The prob is Id like to compare theirs vs ours and we'd win in a landslide. Ark,Fl and Tenn seem to say their calls are the worst. Let them live in the shoes of players for the past 12 years and then complain. As bad as luck has been in this entire time the good ways are definitely in the cards and its only a matter of time. The odds are moving into our favor and now that we have a good coach everything should start coming around to us better eventually. That includes wins, calls, coaching, who land in recruiting, bowl games and the gammot. Its going to be a great time to be a Bama fan and I feel sorry that some fans of other teams are going to have to put their bandwagon gear back into storage closets for good. phhh!

i agree the non-call vs. the lsu db was bad, we have had some tough ones vs. the other tigers as of late 2004 - lsu player landed on a auburn player after a missed extra point and the mugging of the lsu wr vs. auburn last yr.
i would hope that these things have a way of eveninf themselves out.

Have NOT read ALL the posts on this thread but here goes:

My worst call involves two calls in Auburn, the first being the first time we went there when AU used a double tight wishbone formation with a wingback set to the left to score the put away TD and change the game from a one score game to a two score game. Do the math, that is 12 players. This is unexcusable for an entire crew to miss this obvious violation.

The second involved an Alabama WR that caught the ball in the back of the endzone for a TD and the refs ruled him out of the back of the zone. Front page pic the next day showed the Tide WR clearly with one foot in bounds and possession of the ball. I cannot remember the WR's name, but I think he was #85. BAMA would have won that game today due to instant replay.

These calls stick out because they were BAMA-AU. One changed the complexion of the game and the other cost BAMA the game. :BigA::BigA::BigA::BigA:

Oh, and what about the Ark WR that trapped the ball in the endzone when Ford was at Ark. Another case of us winning today with instant replay. I think that was the first time Ark beat us at our place.:BigA::BigA::BigA::BigA:

How about the Cotton Bowl in the early 70s when the Texas QB scrambled for a TD and clearly stepped out of bounds in front of an official? I was about 9 or 10 and I cried over that one. It still brings crimson tears to my blue eyes. :BigA::BigA::BigA::BigA:

I never got real upset about the Penn State call because Gothard was two steps downfield before the ball was snapped. The play should have been blown dead right then.

A couple plays come to mind, the LSU mugging, and the '01 Tennessee game where it's 28-24 Tennessee, we got the ball on the 20 after a touchback, after our 3rd down play the ball was spotted touching the 30 yard line, yet somehow we came up short on the measurement. It's the only time I've ever seen that happen in a football game.

The ALL time worst call was NOT by an official, but the donkey that called the screen against AU a few years back while we were trying to ice away the game. NOW, that was a BAD call. LOL

I wish I had never read this thread.
FreeBro, your great memory made me sick. (I'd put a smiley face here if I had taken the time to learn how). The Texas game was the '73 Cotton Bowl and the Texas player that stepped out of bounds was Lowry. I was there also and I cried too, even though I was 10 years older than you. I'm going to go throw up again.

Ruined the great comeback...remember the SI article. PSU scored on a late drive against Nebraska (I think) and the drive stayed alive with a 4th down catch that was clearly OB. SI showed the PSU field with a large square missing from the EZ and placed on the sideline to explain the call against BAMA and Nebraska.

Good stuff!

Arenas punt return for TD in MSU game...oh, that's right. He was ruled down! Just another game changer by the SEC crew.

If I am not mistaken, that Donkey was Bruce Arians, who is now an Offensive Coordinator in the NFL (Steelers.... I think?). The bad part was when Dubose said to the Media immediately after the game "... Duh, I didn't know what play was called.... maybe I should have been paying attention."

As I've read the posts in this thread I am stumped. You've all covered the worst calls I've witnessed. I will have to say that the Penn State may be the actual worst because the referee was the uncle of the Penn State player. That was blatant cheating.

Most of the reception issues (especially the Auburn touchdown that was ruled out and the Arkansas trap) would have been overturned with the benefit of instant replay, but nevertheless both plays were at least really close calls. The Auburn call was really the tougher call because it was similar to a baseball play at first base. The Arkansas call was bad for two reasons...first yes it was a trap, but what most are forgetting is that the players feet were in the endzone but even when he supposedly caught the ball, the ball never crossed the goal line...it was on the 1/2 yard line. However, what about the 12 men on the field before that play that was not called? That particular '95 game was blown by the refs several times.

The worst call (or no call) I have ever seen in my 29 years is probably the 04 LSU mugging. That was blatant pass interference right in front of the &%&*($ ref on national tv, and it changed the momentum on the game. It would be interesting to hear what CNS has to say about that call.

Didn't the ref that committed the no call get fired after that season?
