First of all, there is no way that over 100 schools are going to give up the money that the 12th game brings in for the off chance that they might get into the playoffs.

Adams acknowledged that he has long opposed a playoff system, largely for academic reasons and because the season is already too long.

The money brought in by the 12th game and the bowls far exceeds the money brought in by a playoff. Would most schools be willing to give up over a million dollars just to figure out if LSU, UGA or USC should be #1?

again i do not think there were 8 worthy teams. i think you should win your conference first. with the plus one format it should have been LSU, Ohio State, USC, and either Oklahoma or Virginia Tech and that is it. Kansas, UGA finished third in their conference so no for them. Hawaii didn't even deserve to be in the bowl game they were in. plus with a playoff we would turn college football to something just like the NFL (shudder)

Well, that punishes strong conferences like the SEC, who often have several teams better than another major conference's best team.

Some years maybe there's four of five one-loss teams. This year several two-loss teams can claim to be the best. An eight-team playoff format gets rid of most of the controversy. I'd rather include one or two lucky teams than exclude one or two deserving teams.

All we need is a couple more years like this one, and Adams won't be the only one making these statements.

Problem is, was, and will be - the Rose Bowl/Big Ten/Pac Ten diehards who think that the Rose Bowl is "sooo important".

What was the problem this year? Seriously...
LSU was the SEC champ, that trumps the other SEC teams. They beat Ohio State, that takes care of the Big 10. USC was a two loss team with no impressive victories but one horrible loss. VT lost, OU lost, Hawaii lost.

Things worked out well and the idea that a team can be NC but not even champ of their own conference is a joke if you think about it. I can see logic for a plus one game but ONLY if it rewards winning a conference championship (and doesn't make winning meaningless, you win a conference championship game you deserve recognition and you don't deserve to have to win your conference twice by playing the next highest team in your conference after already winning it). I've said it before and I'll say it again, either the game matters or it doesn't. Clearly UGA would like it to not matter since they didn't win it. That's a weak argument though, just discount something because you didn't accomplish it... games matter or they don't, conferences matter or they don't. Tossing that all out it absurd, what do we end up doing. We say ok all the other games don't really matter much, now it's just the top ranked teams at the end of the season and they have to earn it all over again. That's what it comes down to? Just being in the top 8 at the end of the year gives you a shot at the NC? A late winning streak makes you the NC?

Every year, when the ncaa basketball tournament selections are announced, there are always several bubble teams that claim that they were 'robbed'' when they don't make the cut.

This happened so much that the tournament expanded from 32 to 40 to 48...and finally to 64 teams. Even with 64 there is still a lot of bubble teams that feel like they were robbed and there is now a play in game for 64/65.

Imagine what this would be like in football.

Yeah, but I don't care about bubble teams. The bubble teams in college football would be getting into minor bowls just like they do already. An eight-team playoff would more than cover legitimate contenders.

It's hard for me to understand why there is resistance among "the powers that be" in college football that prevent a college football playoff.

We have a playoff in all other divisions of college football, Why not D-1? We have a college basketball tournament that determines the national championship and we can have a College World Series that determines the national champion in D-1. Why can't we have a playoff in D-1 college football?

The argument has been made "the bowls have been too good to us." A playoff can be played through the bowls. We don't have to get rid of the bowls.

Look at the excitement and interest that is generated from the college basketball tournament and the College World Series. Can you imagine the excitement of a true college football playoff? Can you imagine the money that would be generated from a college football playoff?

I don't get it.

But the BCS teams won't be making nearly as much money, because the NCAA will have control over any playoff beyond a plus one.

Let's say Georgia gets $10mil for playing in the Sugar Bowl. They get $5mil, and the other $5mil gets split up among the rest of the conference teams. When you look at the number of teams the SEC put into bowls, that translates into a pretty massive payday.

Once you get to an NCAA-sanctioned playoff, the NCAA will take all that money, skim a chunk off the top, and then distribute it not within the conference, but all teams. The BCS teams will come out big losers.

To avoid that scenario, the BCS needs to implement either a simple +1 or a top 4 +1 within the current bowl structure. That will keep the NCAA out of the picture. As usual, the Big10 and Pac 10 are the holdouts, because that method puts one additional game against a quality opponent between them and the title game. And you know how they dislike real competition (and given OSU's performance in bowl games, you can't really blame them).

You may say that you don't care because they don't matter but how do you know that? Arkansas and Kentucky both beat LSU and they aren't anywhere near the top 8.

The playoffs in the NFL and MLB is easy because teams play roughly the same schedule and there are well defined rules. If you try using a poll to do that in college football it will be a disaster that would make the BCS look like a brilliant ida.

That money will dry up just like it did with the NIT in basketball.

The bottom line is that the college presidents run things now and they all care about money and that is pretty much the only thing they care about.

If the playoff system would have generated more money then they would all be pushing for it. The same with the networks. Don't you think they would pushing for a system that improve revenue even more?

The Div-1A teams have to decide - do you want to stay with the current system or change to a playoff and make a lot less money. Southern Cal is pretty much the only team that would unconditionally go for the playoff option because they would have a free ticket every year.

The UGA folks should just STFU. Sure, they finished strong, but they got beat by South Carolina and got absolutely mudholed by a pretty ordinary vile team. They didn't take care of business, plain and simple.

If it's hard to decide who the top 2 teams are, imagine how hard it would be to decide which team is #8 and which is #9.

Every year, plenty of teams can make the case for #2. You can always put three or four of five teams in a hat. That's hardly satisfying.

The team that is #8 will be far less deserving a shot at the title than the #2 team. So, it makes little impact on me if the #9 teams starts whining. The BCS always screws a couple other national championship caliber teams. A playoff will not.

Although I know it is going to be a "long" process, who decides the teams? It will never be "fixed" until there is a playoff between conference champions and it is decided on the field!
