Infrastructure: Memphis I40 bridge over Mississippi river closed indefinitely after stress fracture discovered

The whole thing started from me making an off hand comment in class. All I asked was could you design a beam so heavy that it cannot support itself? The answer was yes, but why would you?

What our attempt to do was create a beam that would fail no matter what you did. The length did not matter. We just wanted it to fail. We were really bored.

Yes it is possible. See dayhiker's post above. I don't remember the size but it was pretty darn big.

When I was taking steel design for architecture, we decided to see if it is at all possible to design a beam that could not support its own weight. How big would it need to be?

Fulmer drove over it. The engineers did not account for the extra weight.

Question: Do You Have A Pet Peeve?

I have a friend that does that. Half way through one of his stories I interrupted and said "to make a short story long..." Everyone laughed and he got the point. He tries very hard not to do that now.

Economic Impacts of Covid - Part II

I went off unemployment due to making more than $999.99 in one week for 3 weeks. I spent the last 2 days at home with nothing to do. I got called back in today for maybe 2 days of work. Does anyone consider me employed?

Pache needs to go off the 40 man roster. He needs to go to Gwinnett or anywhere else but here.

Our best "hitters" went 1-11 tonight. Bullpen didn't do that. Yes, our bullpen sucks beyond words. Our bats have been bad too.

Good news for a structural engineer. They get some work to do. Probably won't go with the original company.

AA is a genius. He lost his ace for the year and then jumped on a guy that Baltimore thinks sucks and cut from the team.

Jags (To) Sign Tim Tebow To Play Tight End

The curse of Atlanta and the Failcons will be Julio Jones getting traded and catching a game winning TD and either knocking them out of a Super Bowl and going on to win the Super Bowl and MVP or beating them in the Super Bowl and winning MVP.
