You bible thumpers REALLY need to read this...

There's no shame in being liberal

August 3, 2004

There they go again. Devoid of ideas, running from the record of failure on the economy and national security, President Bush and his campaign are going negative again, trying to label John Kerry rather than level with Americans.

Wow, I've never read such  stuff. You have clearly changed my mind. I will now have to ignore the fact that 64% of Congressional Democrats and 69% of Senate Democrats (including Al Gore, Sr) voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 while 80% of Congressional Republicans and 82% of Senate Republicans voted FOR the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

I'll also have to forget that a Republican President signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves. Along with all those years that a segregated south was controlled by Democrats.

I'll also ignore that National Health Care goes beyond liberalism and enters into Socialism. And that Social Security is a failing ponzi scheme.

You have me convinced. Conservatives are eeeevil wealthy men who want to enslave the minorities, back-hand slap women and keep them in the home, kill children, poison the air and water, destroy the environment, and tax the poor but keep all their money.

George Orwell would be proud.

Foster, I cant really argue with what you posted but I think the times call for a more diverse set of political opinions. No doubt that liberal minds have built the country into what it is today but IMO, conservative opinions are needed and have been influental in keeping the country from swinging too far to the left. Look at the country as a vehicle, liberals are the throttle and conservatives are the brakes. You need them both else you never move or speed & crash.

You sure Jesse Jackson gave you permission to repost his article?

The article tells us nothing save that one of the premier liberals in the United States doesn't like how many are trying to avoid the term because it is not gaining favor.

And the good reverend, like many political speakers, is using snippets our of the Bible to make a point. For example, Jesus fed the masses that had gathered to see him, the host of hosts. Not welfare. He healed those that beleived in him, even the lady who fought her way through the crowd to touch his robe. He was pretty conservative with those that did not believe in him, as they would be damned to hell. No quarter asked, none given.

Let us hear what you thing, rather than posting someone else's copyrighted material. And remember, though he calls himself a reverend, your idol Mr. Jackson, is first and foremost a "spin doctor".

Peace!

Today the choices are equally clear. Bush and Cheney argue for tax cuts for the wealthy
Hmmm I believe I received a tax refund check and I'm about as far from wealthy as you can get.

Liberals are for rolling back tax cuts for the rich and investing in education so every child gets a fair shot
A typical liberal Democrat wants MORE taxes for ALL not just the rich.

How can you say that^^^ then quote something like this?

You can pick your side -- liberal or conservative, for change or for the status quo, for the poor or for the privileged. For me, I stand with Christ against Herod; Moses against the Pharaoh; the abolitionists against the slaveholders; King against the segregationists, the Suffragettes against the male politicians; the many against the few, and liberals against this crowd in the White House.

Although I don't quite agree with your analogy, I totally agree with your conclusion.

As political landscapes change, the SPECIFICS that liberals and conservatives support also change.

A liberal at the time of the American Revolution would be classified as a right-wing extremist today. They were in favor of meager government because of their experiences with the English throne and Parliament. They supported the right to bear arms because they realized that tyranny can't withstand an armed populace. They supported religious freedom and feared governmental control of religion, not the other way around.

There is nothing wrong with being liberal, as being open-minded toward new and better ways of doing things. However, making hasty changes that might cause more harm than good just for the sake of change isn't being liberal... it is being reckless. We've seen socialism and the welfare state in action and it doesn't work. It doesn't take a genius to realize that, because of human nature, it will NEVER work. Humans are greedy and selfish, by nature, and so will not put forth effort without just reward. Humans, with some exceptions, will generally not expend any more effort than is justified by their needs and wants.

If you allow someone to not work and you still reward them, they will NEVER work. If you allow someone to expend less effort than someone else and get an equal compensation, they will continue to expend less effort. In reaction, the person expending more effort will expend less effort if he realizes that additional effort does not result in greater compensation.

The result is that in the end, either you change the model to allow compensation to be a function of skill and effort(this is capitalism) or you watch productivity fall to nothing. The other option is to force, by threat of imprisonment or violence, people to work for the compensation that the state wants to provide. They have now become slaves, in essence. This is what has happened in practically EVERY nation that tried to become a truly egalitarian socialist state.

So, I don't really consider liberalism as bad. I just think that most liberals don't really think independently, but yet, just as they consider conservatives to do, adhere to the same theories as those ideologically similar that came before them. Most liberalism today is a byproduct of socialist ideals that became nouveau grande during the 20's and 30's and had a revival during the 60's and 70's. Liberalism is driven by the desire to make things better... a desire innate to most people. However, if the call to action isn't tempered by consideration of the possible effects of such action, then it can cause chaos.

Passion is much like a sharp knife. In the controlled hands of a doctor, it can do wonders. However, in the hands of one that is reckless, it can cause mayhem.
