Here's my issue with Lester - he does well in the big games (usually, like vs Bama) and stumbles, fumbles, farts and falls in the games just under the "big" game category (some might consider the lizards a "big" game now, too). He will have his team ready to go lights out against Bama, and survives A&M and the barn (barely). Looks like the Fighting Dabo's took his measure last night, and they really shouldn't have been able to.
The guy is just not, IMO, a "great" coach week in and week out, and really flounders during games. But you can bet your bottom dollar he will have his who's so ready to play Bama they will make it their best game of the year, win or lose. If the who PTB can tolerate that, he has a long tenure in whoville, because they HAVE to have someone who can either beat Bama or have every game decided in the last 1 or 2 minutes. Nothing else will do, not even if the Bama loss every year is their only loss. Barn-ish, yes. But it is what it is, IMO.

We watched until the bitter end. IMO, it was a case of The Hat over-thinking things on LSU's last drive. Clemson expected a run, but got fooled with a 7 yard pass play. Fine. Now RUN the ball and chew up the clock (less than 2 minutes left). Really all they needed was another first down to hang on. BUT NOOOOO, they throw two incomplete passes and punt it back to a QB who's on a hot streak.

Give Clemson proper credit for converting a 4th and 16, but the rest of the drive was fairly routine, aided by some penalties.

Clemson didn't need to use time outs, because an LSU player stayed down on almost every play of Clemson's last drive, stopping the clock. Their defense was absolutely out of gas. The announcers said by game's end the LSU defense had been on the field for almost 100 plays. A number of their starters, including both DE's, were out by then.

A good lesson on conditioning, depth of talent, clock management, and above all... the other team is good, and wants to win the game too!
I give Clemson a lil credit then, but the majority looks to be on Lestine...

I'm sure a lot of those Tigers will be declaring.

From nola.com this morning:

Asking a unit, even one as talented and capable as LSU's nationally ranked group, to defend someone as talented and dangerous as Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd for 100 plays is simply unfair. It's an impossible task, like dumping Michael Phelps into the middle of the Pacific Ocean and asking him to swim home. The job's too big. Eventually, failure is the only option.

Wow. They have really lost confidence in the whole organization, apparently. Unfair? Heh.

i thought clemson would make it a good game until the fourth quarter, same as the fla st game they lost. but, instead we saw a myriad of mistakes by lsu coaches. while the announcers were praising ex tenn def coord chavous, lsu continued to let one receiver beat them, with the same coverage, and nr 24 on him the whole second half, and playing behind hopkins. got so bad, reid in the last few minutes had to come up from his safety position, and try help out. the offense what a joke. they continued their conservative play calling, with mettenberger trying to play like aj throwing underneath all game. sure he was getting rushed, but, he takes so long to throw the ball. really sad showing for the sec. thats the only reason i was rooting for lsu.

If I recall correctly Bama was faced with a similar situation in the SECCG. Holding the ball, we ran three straight times, didn't get the first down but ran the clock. In the end, it made a difference.
Regardless of what the stats say, this one is on Les for play calling that resulted in poor clock management.

The Tiggers are going to lose a LOT of key players to the draft. It will be interesting to see how next year goes. I'm still not of the belief Zach Mett is the answer despite his solid game against Bama.
It is painfully obvious that LSU needs a new OC and QB. The Mettenburger experiment should be over; IMO outside the Alabama game his overall performance was marginal at best and that is being gracious. Once again it appeared, like the NC game last year, that Miles seems to have fallen into the trap of relying on talent alone in addition to having a brain freeze during a game. LSU will continue to recruit talent equal to any team in college football yet the overall coaching appears to be hit or miss. Outside of Chavis, Miles needs to assess his staff in a hurry.

Chavis is certainly adept at teaching proper technique. LSU leads the nation in faking injury to stop the clock.
