re-read The Law by Frederic Bastiat
This a classic libertarian economic treatise from 1850 and response to Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto. It is a brilliant explanation of why socialism constitutes legal plunder, the proper function of the law, and the basis for stable government. This work stands the test of time, as much of what was written 170 years ago easily applies to current economic debates (or what passes for it considering the level of economic ignorance among our political leadership). Bastiat was a champion of the concept that property rights and individual freedoms flowed from natural law.
