I have not read the entire thread but this putting all our eggs in one basket is a mistake, IMO. When a defect surfaces your entire Air Force, Navy and Marine air squadrons are grounded or fly in defective aircraft until someone can isolate why they are crashing all of a sudden.No, the ASSUMPTION is that multirole is cheaper than dedicated platforms--the idea is that savings in parts and training will offset the additional development costs of the platform. The F-35 is evidence of how mistaken that assumption can be.
In WWII when this happened they could always use another plane. Even until recently they could use another plane. Now what will they do? There is only one company making the war plane, either Lockheed-Martin-Vought or McDonnel-Douglas-Lockheed or whichever of the only two companies get the contract.
