That is what I thought as soon as he was taken under the water. And I was for sure right when he was outside crying. Then..that craziness happened.

Yeah, I just noticed that. But he appears to be limping on his right leg, whereas it was his left that the hunters are snacking on. So regardless of how soon he lost the leg, he's still got the virus. And maybe they haven't consumed it yet.
I've decided the tree markings are left by the hunters.
And it was almost like that second kiss from Tasha was a goodbye. He was either going to sacrifice himself to not turn...or wander far away before he turned.
