Question: just watched the Ascot race on NBC...why do the British race the opposite way around from us? Do they always run on grass?
In the United States all race tracks (horses and auto) are counterclockwise (left-handed), although the Belmont Park track was right-handed until 1921. (Man o' War's victory at the 1920 Belmont Stakes was run right-handed.) And was done in 1788 as a protest to England.
In England, horses primarily race counter-clockwise, but in Germany and France, racetracks go both directions, and there is no national standard. In Germany and some other European countries, they call a clockwise track a right-handed track because all turns go to the right.
