The reasons behind the SEC's string of six straight BCS championships have been well documented. Schools like Alabama and LSU pay their coaches handsomely. Their backyard is the most fertile recruiting region in the country. The league's exposure on both CBS and ESPN is unmatched. Give all due credit to Nick Saban, Les Miles, Tim Tebow and Cam Newton. But the conference also knows how to game the system. Its scheduling strategy, mocked by many, is in fact pure genius.

I doubt if it's that many...

After Saturday’s 41-18 loss to Vanderbilt, Tennessee decided to pull the plug on the Derek Dooley era. Dooley went 6-7 in his first season in Knoxville but went 9-14 over the next two years. Also, the Volunteers were just 4-19 in SEC play under his watch and was off to a 0-7 start in 2012. Dooley didn’t inherit a full cupboard to work with in 2010, but the program hasn’t made considerable progress under his watch.
