Joe Namath, Ozzie Newsome, Don Hutson, John Hannah, Derek Thomas, Mark Ingram, Dwight Stephenson; Mark Ingram is the only one of this group who it couldn't be said of he was the best in the world at his position at some point in his career. But he did win the heisman. All the others at some point in their careers were the very best in the world at their position.

We had a scrappy lineman in the 30s- Paul Bryant. He was pretty indomitable.
If what a player did at Bama after he was no longer a player (but a coach) figures in, then Coach Bryant wins hands down.

A player who will later distinguish himself coaching his alma mater to six national championships is a plenty good, although unique player.

There was a SEC ref back in the 70's when I was in school who cliamed the best blocker he ever saw in an SEC game was Coach Bryant as an offensive end. Said PB the player absolutely destroyed anyone in front of him.
