A 2-part question:

A substitute for (a) the offense, or (b) the defense, notices that his team only has 10 players on the field and comes onto the field just as the ball is about to be snapped. How should each situation be handled by the officiating crew?

BTW, since this is the last week of the regular season, it will be the last week for YMTC.

(A) Huddle broke with only ten men, if he comes on now it will be an illegal offence.
(B) a player on defence can come on the field if he is on his side of the line before the ball is snapped.

a) broke huddle with only 10 men and tried to add 11th-illegal substitution

b) don't know-but I would guess that the defense can substitute more freely so no penality

a) as long as the player gets between the numbers(the 9 yard marks), stays behind the line of scrimmage, gets set or is the only man in motion before the ball is snapped there is no foul.

b) as long as the player gets between the numbers(the 9 yard marks) & stays behind the line of scrimmage before snap there is no foul.

My guess

A) Penality - illegal substitution.... I don't think you can run onto the field as the play is starting..

B) legal substitution if you are on the field when the play starts...

Some good guesses - y'all were hitting right around it on the offensive sdie and several got it on the defensive side:

(a) Either team can break the huddle w/ 10 men - that is not a violation. If an offensive player comes on the field to make 11, he must be on his side of the ball, come within 15 yds of the ball, and not violate the shift or motion rules prior to the snap. Additionally, his coming on the field must not deceive the defensive team.

(b) On the defensive side, the substitution is legal as long as the player is on his side of the ball prior to the snap
