Just played game 6 tonight. Lily had 10 points, 17 rebounds, 8 steals, 2 blocks, and 1 turnover.

The rest of the team collectively had 0 points, 14 rebounds, and 26 turnovers in a 10-35 loss. They are 2-4; don't know how they've won two. Lily is having fun even though the team is a special kind of terrible.
Played the last regular season game earlier today. Lily had 12 points and 31 (out of 48 total) rebounds in a 26-28 loss in OT.

The culprit in this game, per usual, was the point guard. In her mind (and with her Dad's very vocal reinforcement), she is the greatest player ever to lay hands on a basketball, and, if only she were allowed to play one-on-five, the team would be undefeated instead of 2-5. Her stat line: 0 points (0-24 FG) and 12 turnovers (including several that lead to gift layups for the opposition). To miss 24 shots in a 30-minute game is perversely impressive.

And still, if Lily hadn't been out of the game with a gusher of a bloody nose for a good portion of the second half, the team might have won.

Basketball may not be in that girl's future. Hopefully Lily will hang in there. These things have a way of working out eventually.

Lily had a great time this season in spite of the team's record. This is her third year of playing, and it all came together for her about mid-season. She had only scored two points the first two seasons; incredibly she was only able to take two or three shots in two years. I was finally able to convince her that if she waits for a teammate to pass her the ball she'll never score. She has to get her opportunities off rebounds. I've worked with her on taking control of the post, getting the rebound, and then making a power move to take a quality shot. Her success encourages her to be even more aggressive, and she's been noticed. The eighth grade coach even came out to see her play the last couple of games. At the end of the year party he told me he wanted to poach Lily from next year's seventh grade team. Lily is walking on air due to the attention. :)

We'll look to send her to basketball camp this Summer to work on her dribbling and outside game. In the meantime, she's playing volleyball and running track this Spring. Got to keep her busy and away from the gangs.

I would like to brag on my kid. But in Maysville it would go like this: " Junior is doing real good. He may get out early if they count his good time. He may make Trusty if he keeps doing good". Real proud of the young fella. Hope they fix his teeth while he's in there!

One of the most satisfying thing about coaching is watching the light come on. Especially when it is your own kid.

Well, I am going to give you an update on my child's college decision. He was wait listed for Rice University so he has decided to attend Alabama. Florida gave him half tuition, but Alabama is going to give him full tuition and a little extra from the engineering department.

He told us the other day that he was finally at peace because of waiting around for these colleges to let him know about accepting him or not. He is really getting excited about attending the University now. We are too. Him moving to Houston was going to be a long trip.

Congratulations on your son’s decision. Tell him he needs to establish and develop a relationship with Dr. Karr, the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Dr. Karr is like no other academic I’ve ever met. Looks and sounds like a drill sergeant, and can sometimes act like it. He’s also one of the the most passionate people you’ll ever find about the University of Alabama, and a HUGE advocate to have in your corner.

Properly nurtured, it could be a life-changing contact.

I have 3 kids and love them all. They have their ups and downs. I lined em up boy girl boy. And the hardest one to raise so far has been the girl. Nowadays with social media it can get vicious. I thought I had it rough. But enough about the good stuff... Lol
My daughter, who is about to be 20, started playing softball when she was 7 or 8. I was out practicing with my son and she picked a bat up and wanted to practice too. Well she made contact with every ball. So I decided to a sign her up for rec ball. She made all-stars every year except one (should have made it then too). Had a unassisted triple play at 3rd when she was 9 (caught the line drive, stepped on the bag, and tagged the runner) . Began to pitch when she was 10. When she was 15 we went to Bham to visit this cute nurse I was seeing and her daughter played. She played in an 15-18u league. Well they were short a player. So I told them my daughter could play outfield if they needed her to. When the coaches heard she could pitch they let her try. You should have seen the coaches faces when my daughter was striking out the 18 year old players :) they asked if she could play in a tourney that weekend and she agreed. She pitched all the games. She had offers at the end of the tournament to move up to Bham and go to school. She continued her career down in our hometown, playing high school ball etc. Thoughts of college ball were looming in my head.
When she was 17 however she started having irregular heartbeats. She was taken to the emergency room one day and found to have a heart murmur. We then went to Montgomery to see a specialist and he did an ultrasound on her heart and saw she had one large hole and several small holes on a inner wall of her heart. We made several trips to Bham's Children's hospital where eventually she had to have open heart surgery to repair her heart. While there they discovered a rare genectic tumor on her right adrenal gland above her kidney about the size of a tennis ball. They were able to remove it, taking with it her adrenal gland. Because of its rarity the medicine she took before surgery was very expensive. I literally held 39000 dollars in pills in my hands. We spent maybe a month at Children's. It was rough...the hospital food. No words. But her heart problems were a blessing. Without them we may have never discovered the life threatening tumor.
Needless to say she had to give up sports and thoughts of college ball. But she was probably stronger than me through the whole ordeal. And came through tough as nails. She now has a 6" scar down her chest that she calls her battle scar. She is definitely a warrior and is one of the three most wonderful kids I know :)

Man it is good to hear how all this turned out. I love the way she has embraced the "battle scar" on her. We have spent many a night at UAB and up here in Vanderbilt. Those doctors and nurses in those hospitals are very good people. The way they make the children a top priority really helps a parent out. My child has had four brain surgeries and has a scar in the shape of a 7 on his head. It definitely makes them tough, but I still hate thinking about how much they had to go through.

Props to the OP for this post idea! My 23 year old daughter graduated cum laude from UAB in December with a degree in elementary education and has taken 5 of her masters classes in ESL. Currently looking for permanent employment and will finish her masters at night. Soon to be 20 year old son graduated HS with a high enough gpa and test scores to go just about anywhere he wanted. Accepted a Presidential scholarship to UAB but quickly discovered he had no clue what he wanted to do and was gone within a semester and a half. He battled some depression which was honestly the hardest thing I've ever had to go through in my life and that includes watching my mother die from cancer when I was 25. He is doing much better now and plans to enroll at Jacksonville State in the fall. I guess I can attribute it to my wife but my kids are waaaaay smarter than I ever was, less the common sense sometimes. All in all I couldn't be any more proud of mine and cherish every day I have with them.

My boy ran a 4:32 1600 meters last night in a track meet. It was a personal best for him, but now he is going to try to get under that time at the next meet. To move on past the sub-sectional meet he will need to be at a 4:25 or under probably.

He just does outdoor. He started swimming a long time ago because he wanted to do triathlons. I coach track so of course he runs track. He has never done cross county because he would have had to miss too much swim practice. We have traveled all over the country doing tri's though and we all love it. When he starts at the University in the fall his goal is to be a part of the triathlon club.
