The Crimson Tide arms allowed a season-high 15 hits in the loss

March 15, 2016

HATTIESBURG, MS
- Alabama baseball fell, 9-2, at Southern Miss on Tuesday evening. The Crimson Tide arms allowed a season-high 15 hits leading to nine runs in the midweek contest.

"Southern Miss has a really good club and they played really well tonight," said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. "They outplayed us, particularly from the middle of the game on. Their offense was really good tonight, and we didn't have an answer for them."

The Tide allowed a season-high 15 hits and tied a season-high mark with nine runs allowed. Alabama starter Mike Oczypok (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and one walk. The trio of Ray Castillo, Zac Rogers and Tyler Adams followed and allowed a combined three runs on seven hits with one strikeout.

Southern Miss kicked off the game's scoring, plating a pair in the bottom of the fourth, using a walk and three consecutive singles to kick off the game's scoring. A Golden Eagle sacrifice fly in the next at-bat extended the early lead to 2-0 through four full.

Alabama narrowed the gap to 2-1 with one tally in the top of the fifth. Chandler Avant doubled down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position with one out, and then Daniel Cucjen singled to put runners on the corners. Keith Holcombe sent a chopper to second and beat out the turn by the Southern Miss shortstop on the double play attempt to allow UA's first run to cross. The Golden Eagles responded with one of their own in the bottom of the fifth to set the score at 3-1 after five.

The sixth saw Southern Miss add three runs on four hits, eventually chasing Oczypok, and giving the Golden Eagles a 6-1 lead. The Tide would answer with one run in the seventh, loading the bases with a leadoff walk and a pair of singles. Avant sent a sacrifice fly to right to score one and narrow the gap to 6-2. A bunt attempt became out number two and then a deep flyout to center ended the Crimson Tide scoring threat in the seventh.

In the bottom of seven, USM crossed three more on four hits to extend the lead to 9-2 and put the game out of reach.

Alabama's hitting effort was led by Avant, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Also collecting two hits was Will Haynie, with the catcher going 2-for-3 on the night.

The Crimson Tide will now travel to Baton Rouge to begin Southeastern Conference play with the LSU Tigers. The two teams will take part in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The two teams will meet for a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday before closing out the series with a 1 p.m. first pitch in Sunday's finale.
