DESTIN, Fla.--Back in March, Georgia football coach Kirby Smart announced that defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter was suspended for one game for his arrest on two misdemeanor alcohol-related charges.
His update on Tuesday as SEC spring meetings began: Stay tuned.
Ledbetter had charges dropped last week for underage possession of alcohol and using a fake ID because the way evidence was obtained.
Smart wouldn’t say if Ledbetter still will miss the Sept. 3 opener against North Carolina for a first-time violation of Georgia’s alcohol policy.
“We’ll find out with the first game,” Smart said at the Sandestin Beach Hilton.
Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has deferred comment on Ledbetter’s decision to Smart.
"Jonathan has had a suspension issued to him," Smart said when asked again later. "We'll see the first game."
The evidence showed that the freshman from Tucker was intoxicated, Athens-Clarke Solicitor General C.R. Chisholm told the Athens Banner-Herald that we would not be able to overcome a motion to suppress in the case.”
Smart also hasn’t announced suspensions for defensive lineman Julian Rochester and defensive back Chad Clay who were arrested in April on two felony charges for an incident in which police said they damaged property at their dorm by shooting a BB gun.
“Again, we’ll find out with the first game,” Smart said of suspension to Rochester and Clay. “Both those kids have been disciplined internally.”
There’s a chance those charges could be reduced.
"It's still playing itself out," Smart said of the legal proceedings.
Smart said cornerback Juwuan Briscoe has also been disciplined internally for his April arrest for driving without a valid license and not wearing a seat belt.
“Each one of them is facing discipline action and each one of them has done everything we’ve asked them to do,” Smart said. “Each one of those kids is serving their punishment and doing the things they’ve got to do in order to be where we want them to be, which is out there in the fall.”
