I'm taking Winkipop in for a Rhinoscopy tomorrow. She's had some hacking and nasal discharge issues - no blood, thankfully - just a lot of snot. My vet and I decided this would be the next logical diagnostic step. Will keep you posted.

Hoping it is something treatable.

We just put down our first dog, a giant mutt we had gotten from the local animal shelter over 10 years ago. Was my first inside dog, and the eggs is devastated. Atari, the big guy on the right, will be very much missed in our home.

So sorry man......I know he had a great life and knew he was loved. Keep and cherish his memories close to your heart.....

It looks as though I am going to have to put down our 15-17 year old cat, not sure of his age. Our daughter rescued him from an animal shelter when she was in college in 2009 and we inherited him shortly thereafter. Mr. Watson has been a good cat, and of course being retired he has been my shadow. This is our last animal, two cats and one dog all gone and Mr. Watson is the only one left. As much as I love dogs and cats this is our last one, can't take the heart break when they die. I just hope that whatever awaits us when we die all of our pets are there to greet us, what a great thought.

:( Sorry to hear this, Gray.....my heart breaks for you and yours - very tough situation to go through. Mr. Watson will live on in your hearts forever and he knew he was loved and I'm sure had a good life. Godspeed Mr. Watson....

Quick Winkipop report:

Long day at the vet today but her X-rays & blood work all came back good and after the nose scope the vet said she didn't see anything that could physically be causing her issues --- but she has inflammation (called Rhinitis) so we're going to try some antibiotics and nose drops and see if that helps. The vet also took a tissue sample to send off to see if it will point us in the right direction wrt causal pathogen.

I'm impressed with this vet and clinic - very thorough with a structured troubleshooting approach.

At least we've eliminated a few things and narrowed down the possibilities.

Here's Winks when I picked her up today - ready to go back home!

For those who have had to put down your animals, how do you know it’s time? Dudley has an enlarged heart, spinal stenosis, severe arthritis, and is on 5 medications a day. Since it has been warming up, he has started coughing more, not able to walk very far without having to sit down and rest. The only things he still does well is eat and uses the bathroom where he’s suppose to. The boy loves to eat, and he never turns anything down, but for the last few days, he gets choked on his dog food maybe because he eats to fast and his heart is pressing on his trachea. IDK for sure what’s causing it, but it’s been an everyday occurrence for a few days. I always said I’d know when to do this when he quit fetching and eating. Well he can’t fetch anymore. It’s just hard when you know mentally he’s still strong, but his body is failing. I’m afraid it’s about time. I’m going to see how he does up until spring break at the end of this month. I don’t want him suffering. I just don’t want it to be too early or too late a decision.

Jessica, it is a heartbreaking decision, and quite honestly I do not know what the answer is. I have a 16 year old cat that could not stand or walk without falling over, he would not eat or drink anything. This was Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. Yesterday he started to eat, jumped up in his chair and now follows me around the house like before. So I guess the moral of the story is you never know how they will respond. I do agree that not eating and not being able to relieve himself is not a good sign. I hate this for you and him, but I know you will do what is best for him. Will be thinking of you and Dudley.

He still eats well, but sometimes he’ll eat too fast and it causes it to get stuck. He loves his treats I give him every morning with his pills. I thought when he quit eating as well I’d know, but I think he’s going to eat till his death, so I don’t think that’s going to be a good indicator.

I have been noticing that his abdomen looks bigger, but I thought he was putting on weight. Looking closer at him today, I think he’s starting to get a distended abdomen. I’m afraid that means he’s getting worse. I’m going to call my vet next week, and talk with him about everything.

You'll approve of this, Bazza. My Mom found another abandoned, injured dog the other day. Poor thing is near-blind, so it's previous owner decided to dump the animal. Fortunately my Mom has him now and took him to the vet and then to an animal eye specialist. It will cost her more than $4000, but, if the surgery is successful, the pup will see again. He'll require a lot of attention for a month after surgery (various eye drops four times/day), but my Mom has no problem giving her time (in addition to her money) to helping abused/injured/abandoned animals. She's their patron saint. :)

Wow.....bless her soul.....she's quite an angel, Bodhi!

That dog hit the mother lode!

Please pass along my best wishes and a hug too when you get a chance.

This made my day.....thanks, man! :)

My sweet Dudley has been diagnosed with CHF. He has very bad ascites, and the increase in Lasix isn’t helping too much. I talked with my vet today because I was curious about getting him a paracentesis done. He didn’t seem to like that idea because of it only lasting one or two weeks. It’s not going to help long term and he said he wouldn’t put his dog through it if it were him. He said I should start thinking about putting him down, which I knew was coming sooner rather than later. It’s rough, though, because he’s still mentally sharp and loves to eat. Better too soon than too late I suppose.
