Georgia’s quarterback battle will roll into August for a second straight year.
One of those who competed for the starting job last year is again waged in another competition for a coach he played for previously.
Faton Bauta and redshirt junior Nick Stevens are vying to start for second-year Colorado State coach Mike Bobo, the former Georgia offensive coordinator.
Asked the chances Bauta will be his starting quarterback, Bobo said this week: “There’s a good chance. He was co-No. 1 coming out of spring practice. The thing about Faton, I had him for three, coach (Mark) Richt had him for another year, he hasn’t played a lot of football. When you’re a third-team guy, you don’t actually practice a lot. As spring went on for us, he got a lot of reps and you saw a guy get better and I saw some improvement.”
Bauta would have to unseat Stevens, a returning starter who threw for 2,679 yards with 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for a team that went 7-6, but Bauta knows Bobo’s offense well.
Bauta was recruited to Georgia by Bobo out of Dwyer High in West Palm Beach, Fla., but backed up Aaron Murray and Hutson Mason before Bobo left after 14 seasons as a Bulldogs assistant.
Bobo was in Georgia at satellite camps in Emerson Wednesday and Buford Thursday that Georgia coach Kirby Smart and staff attended.
Bauta fell behind Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey last preseason under coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer. Lambert and Ramsey remain and are being pushed by freshman Jacob Eason on the depth chart.
Lambert, the Virginia graduate transfer, won the job last preseason and started every game except Florida.
The seldom-used Bauta got the call and it backfired with a four-interception day in a 27-3 loss to the Gators that may have sealed the fate for Richt at Georgia.
Now Bauta is a graduate transfer at Colorado State in the Mountain West Conference after leaving the Bulldogs following the regular season after Richt’s firing.
Bauta completed 16 of 29 passes for 203 yards with three touchdowns and one interception at Colorado State’s spring game. Stevens went 8 of 20 for 90 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Of Bauta, Bobo said: “I still think there’s a lot of improvement that he can make. His (best) football is ahead of him.”
