On the eve of preseason practices starting, some Georgia staff members were up late sending social media signals to coveted recruits.
Wide receivers coach James Coley and offensive line graduate assistant D.J. Looney joined college football coaches nationwide early Monday morning taking advantage of a new recruiting rule that took effect at the stroke of midnight.
Athletic staff members are now permitted to retweet, like or favorite a recruit’s post but are not permitted to comment.
Coach Kirby Smart didn’t jump in before the sun came up, but Coley and Looney were busy on Twitter.
Coley retweeted Florida cornerback commitment Latavious Brini three times, Newton wide receiver target Jeremiah Holloman three times, five-star wide receiver target Nico Collins from Pinson, Ala., three times and Pace Academy wide receiver commitment Trey Blount twice.
Looney retweeted 11 Georgia commitments or targets including quarterback commitment Jake Fromm from Houston County and offensive line commitments Netori Johnson, Andrew Thomas and D’Antne Demery, running back commitment Toenil Carter, Holloman and Grayson cornerback Jamyest Williams.
Tight ends coach Shane Beamer got into the act at about 6 a.m. retweeting Buford tight end Major Tennison and later retweeting Virginia offensive tackle Mekhi Becton and South Carolina wide receiver Ortre Smith. Offensive line coach Sam Pittman, running backs coach Dell McGee and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney later joined in. Chaney retweeted Fromm and 2018 Cartersville 5-star quarterback target Trevor Lawrence.
Marshall Malchow, Georgia’s director of player personnell, and Lukman Abdulai, director of on-campus recruiting, also were active.
Former Georgia coach Mark Richt, now at Miami, was one of the first head coaches to go all in right after midnight. So was TCU’s Garry Patterson.
Tennessee’s Butch Jones sent a flurry of retweets Monday morning and South Carolina’s Will Muschamp also was retweeting.
