The camp portion of Georgia’s preseason practices wrapped up on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs went 10 straight days prior to classes beginning on Thursday.
“There’s a little change in demeanor,” coach Kirby Smart said after practice Wednesday. “For me it’s way too early to be out of camp. We’ve got to continue to push these guys and get a lot out of them even though school is starting.”
Georga was scheduled to practice three more days in a row culminating with a scrimmage on Saturday, the first of the preseason.
Smart was heading Wednesday evening to speak to the incoming freshmen in a class of 2020 welcome with UGA president Jere Morehead in Sanford Stadium. The players moved out of the hotel they were staying at during camp on Wednesday and Smart said they were ready for the routine of going back to classes.
Athens has reached 90 degrees every day of Georgia’s camp and for 43 straight days, according to the Twitter handle athensgaweather, but Smart said Georgia got some relief by a “nice, cool practice” on Tuesday night.
“Good tempo, a little bit easier,” Smart said. “Then today, it was back hot and they were back dragging. Any time you’ve got that it’s frustrating as a coach because you want to see leaders arise.”
As far as the first scrimmage, Smart wasn’t sure what the format will be, saying it would be based off of Thursday and Friday practices.
“We’ve got some things we’ve got to knock out on both sides of the ball before Saturday,” he said.
Smart wasn’t sure “to what extent Nick Chubb” would go in the scrimmage.
The star junior running back has been full go in practice, but a scrimmage would amp up the competition level as he returns from a left knee injury that ended his season last October.
“Nick’s been to the ground in several drills we’ve had out there,” Smart said. “That’s not a major concern of mine. We’ll have a certain number of reps we want Nick to get on Saturday. Whatever that number is we’ll determine on Friday.”
Chubb is ahead of running back Sony Michel in his return of injury. Michel is practicing with his left forearm that was broken in an ATV accident on July 4 weekend protected.
“Sony’s big thing right now is conditioning and rehabbing and trying to prove his overall ability to sustain through process,” Smart said.
There will be a plan for the number of snaps for each quarterback--senior Greyson Lambert, freshman Jacob Eason and junior Brice Ramsey--will get with each offensive group in the scrimmage, Smart said.
“It’s going to be the same thing,” Smart said. “We’ll see how they respond to a little bit of a gameday type atmosphere.”
Coaches have been looking at the statistics and gauging the decision-making of each candidate, Smart said.
“Saturday is going to be a big indicator of who’s going to continue to get more reps after that,” Smart said. “We’ll have to wait and see.”
