Some of Georgia’s most heated competition this preseason is on special teams where the kicker and punting jobs are on the line.
Coach Kirby Smart wanted both spots shrouded in some mystery when asked after Saturday to give his assessment after the Bulldogs’ first preseason scrimmage, which was closed to the media.
“The punter hit some good punts so that was promising,” he said.
And exactly which punter would that be?
“Flip a coin,” he said. Smart used the same phrase when asked about the kickers.
He did give a hint about punter where Brice Ramsey, the quarterback who took over as punter last season, is competing with freshman Marshall Long.
“No, I think both those kids have punted well,” he said. “The operation times of the freshman have improved every day and Brice gets it off as quick as anybody but the other kid has probably been more consistent.”
Long, a signee from China Grove, N.C., has dealt with a sore leg and a groin injury this preseason because he arrived later than most of the other freshmen.
Smart didn’t offer up as much on whether kicker Rodrigo Blankenship or William Ham had the better scrimmage Saturday.
All he would say is that “one guy made it and one guy didn’t.”
