The coin toss before Georgia and North Carolina play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game Sept. 3 was set to involve former Bulldog coach Vince Dooley and former Tar Heels coach Bill Dooley.
Now, the 45th anniversary of the brothers’ coaching meeting in the Gator Bowl will be a time to remember Bill Dooley, who died last week at his home in Wilmington, N.C. at the age of 82.
“We’re going to recognize Bill with a moment of silence before the game,” said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl Inc. president and CEO, which puts on the game, “and then have Ashton and Sean (two of his four sons) represent him with Vince in doing the coin toss.”
Said Vince Dooley: “I think it will mean a lot to the family.”
The 5:30 p.m. game in the Georgia Dome will be the first time the teams have faced each other since that 1971 game in Jacksonville. Bill Dooley was looking forward to being a part of it.
“My brother was excited about doing it, to see his old Georgia buddies and his North Carolina buddies,” Vince Dooley said.
Bill Dooley went 161-127-5 as head coach at North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He was an offensive assistant at Georgia under Vince, his older brother, from 1964-66.
Bill Dooley won three ACC titles, including the school’s first outright championship in 1971. He coached at the school from 1967-77, left as the winningest coach in Tar Heels history and is tied for second on the school’s all-time wins list with 69.
