Kirby Smart offered a surprising approach when he hired Dell McGee as Georgia’s running backs coach.
“The worst thing you can do is coach those guys,” Smart said to the Touchdown Club of Athens Monday. “If they run the ball good, let them run the ball. Let them be who they are.”
More importantly, according to Smart, McGee, who previously coached two seasons at Georgia Southern, is charged with adding elite recruits to the backfield.
“He knows that his key ingredient to our staff is to be able to recruit,” Smart said.
“He's one of our best recruiters. He is relentless on these backs.”
While most of Georgia’s recruiting needs can be addressed in the Peach State and the South, Smart says running back is a position the Bulldogs can draw talent from nationally.
Former stars came from all over the country to play at Georgia: Knowshon Moreno (New Jersey), Terrell Davis (California), Rodney Hampton (Texas) and Todd Gurley (North Carolina) are a few examples.
Georgia’s returning leading rusher Sony Michel is a native of Plantation, Florida and class of 2017 commitment Toneil Carter is from Houston, Texas.
“The backs have come from everywhere,” Smart said. “… We can recruit nationally at this position, and Dell does a nice job of that.”
Once they’re on campus, Smart, who coached running backs at Georgia in 2005, says McGee’s coaching job isn’t complicated.
“Get them to the bus,” Smart said. “Let them go play.”
