Limited details about the birth were revealed ahead of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine's scientific congress in Salt Lake City next month, where it will be discussed more fully.

According to critics, the procedure is tantamount to genetic modification of humans or even "playing God". But supporters say it allows women with a particular type of genetic disease to have healthy children who are related to them.

Probably should be the first "intentional" three parent baby. Although it's much rarer in humans than in some other species, an ovum can be fertilized by more than one sperm, in which case the the resulting chimera will have more than just one set of DNA. Sometimes, this is fatal and sometimes the person appears normal until a DNA test is done. Chimeras can also be formed when one twin absorbs another in the womb, ending up with two sets of DNA...
