COLUMBIA, S.C.--Greetings from Williams-Brice Stadium in a state where there are still more significant things going on today than playing football.
The Georgia-South Carolina game will be played as the cleanup continues on the coast from Hurricane Matthew, but there were few signs on this Sunday morning on the drive in from Athens about the storm.
I did see a convoy of “Lift-All” contruction trucks heading down I-20 from Georgia, perhaps to help assist clear damage.
Gameday traffic in Columbia is usually one of the worst in the SEC, but there was no issue whatsoever cruising over to the stadium for this rescheduled game, pushed back from Saturday night.
Now as I write this at noon, there are plenty of tailgate spots available just over the stadium scoreboard. It has the feel outside of a middle tier ACC game not involving Florida State or Clemson.
This won’t be a typical SEC game crowd here, but it may be that there are more that just show up closer to kickoff after church.
As Gene Sapakoff of the Charleston-Post Courier just reminded, the students have been out of school since Wednesday so even those numbers would be down.
It's sunny and 72 here now and breezy with the forecast calling for temperatues to rise into the mid 70s during the game with no rain predicted.
There’s another college football game also being played after being shifted a day.
Florida Atlantic is hosting Charlotte in Boca Raton, Fla. and has made that game free admission.
Both teams have tried to keep the focus on the game and not the decision on when and where to play the game. South Carolina announced Wednesday night that the game was staying in Columbia and the decision came down Thursday night that the game was on Sunday afternoon.
“There’s been a lot of talk but it’s really not something you can focus on,” Georgia running back Sony Michel said. “Coach has done a good job of making us focus on the game and right now we’re focusing on South Carolina, so that’s what we’re focusing on. As far as we’re concerned, everything’s on track, we’re ready to travel, be the away team and go play a football game.”
South Carolina coach Will Muschamp was ready for playing Saturday or Sunday.
Muschamp said preparation for both Saturday or Sunday.
"I've got a schedule for a Saturday game and a Sunday game,” Muschamp said before the game was finally pushed to Sunday, “and we'll make adjustments immediately as soon as we know something.”
--Pregame notes:
--It's not just the teams that had to shift their schedules. So did the officiating crew. This one will be refereed by Hubert Owens.
--Inside linebacker Reggie Carter (concussion) is indeed on the 70-man travel roster. Carter wasn't seen at practice Monday through Wednesday. No other real surprises. Georgia brought four quarterbacks including walk-on Sam Vaughn. Of course, Brice Ramsey is also a punter.
Not on the trip: wide receivers Shaquery Wilson and Shakenneth Wiliams, tailback Tae Crowder, cornerback Shattle Fenteng, linebackers Johnny O'Neal and Keyon Brown, offensive linemen Pat Allen. Freshmen headed to redshirts also aren't here: offensive linemen Ben Cleveland and Chris Barnes and outside linebacker Chauncey Manac.
--Missed this earlier, but backup offensive guard Solomon Kindley isn't on the travel roster. We'll have to get update after the game on the reason behind that.
--Georgia players were getting an earful from some South Carolina fans behind an end zone during pregame warmups. "How did that Tennessee game work out?"
--Tailback Nick Chubb, who got just one carry last week due to a sprained ankle, was announced with the Georgia starters and is working with the No. 1 unit during pregame warmups.
--Still a bunch of empty seats inside a half hour before kickoff.
Check back for updates leading to kickoff.
