COLUMBIA, S.C. | Kirby Smart spoke to Jacob Eason with a hand placed on the freshman quarterback’s helmet.
Eason just had a pass intended for Javon Wims deflected high in the air and picked off by South Carolina cornerback Antoine Wilder to give the Gamecocks the ball at its own 10-yard line with 8:55 to go in the third quarter.
It was the kind of day for Eason, who completed just 5 of 17 passes for 29 yards with a touchdown and interception. His longest pass went for nine yards in the 28-14 Georgia win Sunday.
Smart said Eason had to battle “tough conditions” early in the game with the wind, but South Carolina’s Perry Orth went 4 of 6 in the first quarter for 31 yards and finished 26 of 36 for 288 yards.
“We came into tough conditions, weather conditions and the wind is kind of blowing hard,” said wide receiver Terry Godwin of a north-northwest wind of 10 miles per hour at kickoff. “Those are some of the things you’ve got to learn to fight hard and play in. With him, this is probably his first experience with that type of weather. He’s going to grow as he gets older.”
It was the fewest passing yards for Georgia in game since it had 28 in a 33-10 loss to Auburn in 1990.
No, Smart, said he didn’t consider turning to fifth-year senior Greyson Lambert, who set an NCAA completion percentage record against South Carolina last year when he went 24 of 25 in a 52-20 Georgia win.
Smart said Eason kept his composure but his feet were too active.
“He got a little bit of happy feet in the pocket at times,” said Smart, the first-year Georgia coach. “It’s a growing process. Look guys, when you go on the road in the SEC, I’ve been 18 years involved in this conference, it is tough, especially on a true freshman. He saw things out there that didn’t exist. He’s growing and we’ve got to help him through that.”
Eason, like all Georgia freshmen, hasn’t been made available this season for interviews.
He was 2 of 5 in the first quarter, with one of the completions a pass dumped off to Sony Michel for a 4-yard loss. He sailed a pass to Javon Wims towards the sideline.
On one drive in the second quarter, Reggie Davis had to wait on a deep ball that went incomplete. Eason was flushed left on third down and attempted a sidearm pass that also was incomplete.
It wasn’t all on Eason. He had a pass in the end zone dropped by Isaiah McKenzie and a swing pass to Nick Chubb dropped in the third quarter.
Smart said he didn’t talk to Eason about those balls that he overshot, but said offensive coordinator Jim Chaney may have discussed it with him.
“I don’t want him thinking about that, I want him to think about executing,” Smart said.
