Georgia inside linebacker Reggie Carter missed practice time last week after a concussion but was cleared to play Sunday at South Carolina and would have been used in an “emergency” situation, according to coach Kirby Smart, but never got in the game.
That meant starters Natrez Patrick and Roquan Smith--the team's leading tacklers this season with 36 and 33 tackles, respectively--just about maxed out on snaps, Patrick said, but there was an upside to that.
“We didn’t have as many defensive snaps as the other games,” Patrick said. “It kind of balanced out as like a regular game.”
South Carolina had 62 offensive snaps. Smith made 11 tackles and had a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Patrick had two tackles and a tackle for loss.
Smith plays in the dime package and Patrick also said he took a couple of snaps in that look. Patrick didn’t think any other inside linebackers played on defense.
Carter, who had 14 tackles and has started four games, was working third team inside linebacker early in a position drill Tuesday.
“I expect him to play," Smart said of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt. "He was cleared last week and he was an emergency guy that if we needed him he could play. Both of those two other kids are playing good and they took all of the reps in practice. We felt good about them playing, so they played. Reggie was ready to go if we needed him.”
