GAIN SOME CONFIDENCE IN THE PASSING GAME
Jacob Eason went from completing 60.7 percent of his passes against Tennessee to going 5 of 17 against South Carolina last Sunday. Some high-percentage play calls and using the tight ends more in the passing game could help. Continuing to run well will also bring more defenders into the box.
WIN EARLY DOWNS
Georgia’s defense can put the pressure on Vanderbilt by putting the Commodores in third-and-long, where they have struggled. Vanderbilt is tied for 109th in third-down conversions, converting only 33.7 percent of the time. Georgia ranks seventh in the SEC in third-down defense at 36.6 percent after holding South Carolina to just two of 13 on third downs.
CONTINUE TO BE OPPORTUNISTIC ON DEFENSE.
Georgia is second in the SEC with 15 takeaways after recovering two South Carolina fumbles and getting an interception on Sunday. Vanderbilt has its issues, but turning the ball over hasn’t been one of its biggest. The Commodores rank third in the SEC in fewest turnovers committed with seven.
PUT TOGETHER A FOUR-QUARTER GAME.
Georgia hasn’t played what would be considered a complete game all season where it had control of the game the entire way. This one offers that opportunity. After all, Vanderbilt got outscored in every quarter in a 38-7 licking it took at Georgia Tech on Sept. 17. But the Commodores have been in tight games each of the last three weeks in an overtime win at Western Kentucky and losses to Florida 13-6 and Kentucky 20-13.
DON’T GIVE UP THE BIG PLAY
Vanderbilt doesn’t have the explosive ability on offense that Georgia saw in the likes of Ole Miss and Tennessee. The Commodores rank 124th nationally in passing yards per completion at 10.16 and have only nine plays of 20 or more yards passing, according to cfbstats.com. “The consistency by which we have to throw and catch, it just has to be better,” Commodores coach Derek Mason said.
