Two weeks ago, Cedar Shoals drew first blood against rival Clarke Central. On Friday night against region leader Buford, the Jaguars scored first once again.
But by the end of the first half, that early elation was long gone, as Buford raced to a 49-7 halftime lead on their way to a 56-14 win.
“As hard as it is to score in this league, we’ll take ’em how we can get ’em,” Cedar Shoals head coach Leroy Ryals said.
Aakeem Glenn and Stavion Stevenson connected for the first score on a fake field goal pass with 7:23 remaining in the first quarter.
But the Wolves retaliated with 49 straight points, the first on a 34-yard run by Anthony Grant three minutes after the Jaguars score. Grant and his fellow backs were only getting started, as he followed with a five-yard touchdown run with a minute left in the quarter.
Derrian Brown added another score soon thereafter, as the Wolves recovered the ensuing onside kick leading to a 24-yard Brown touchdown run and a 21-7 first quarter lead.
“Our first group is really starting to gel, and it was certainly a big night for the offense,” Buford coach Jess Simpson said.
In the second quarter, T.D. Roof joined on the action with a score from a yard out with 5:32 left in the half. Christian Turner became the fourth Buford rusher to score when he punched in a run from two yards out two minutes later.
On third and goal from the Cedar Shoals 5-yard line, the Jaguars stopped the Wolves short. Cedar Shoals linebacker Denarian Davenport was injured on the play and was taken off by stretcher. This comes after Clarke Central’s Jaylon Bonner was injured in a similar fashion two weeks ago against Buford.
The Wolves followed that stoppage in play up with a two-yard touchdown run by Roof and recovered the ensuing kickoff with 20 seconds left in the half. Turner took the first run thereafter for a 32-yard score and a 49-7 lead at the half.
Davin Bryant became the fifth Buford rusher to score on a five-yard touchdown with 3:54 left in the third quarter. Cedar Shoals finally answered with a touchdown return on the following kickoff by Jerphari Colbert to make the score 56-14.
“It’s fun being on the road and our kids playing in new places and new environments,” Simpson said. “We’re in Week 8 and this thing’s clicking by pretty fast.”
The Jaguars make the trip to Loganville next week to take on the Red Devils, while Buford faces Walnut Grove on the road.
