Georgia already ranked third in the SEC when it came to committing the most penalties before Saturday.
It had eight penalties for 53 yards in the loss to Vanderbilt, getting flagged at least that many times for the fifth time this season and for the fourth straight game. Three more Georgia penalties were declined.
“That’s just not executing,” tight end Jeb Blazevich said. “I don’t know if it was guys weren’t locked in or what was going on.”
The Bulldogs drove to the Vanderbilt 36 on its second to last offensive drive before center Brandon Kublanow was called for holding on third-and-3 on a Jacob Eason 20-yard run to make it third-and-13 from the 46. The Bulldogs ended up punting.
“We had a couple of penalties that were aggressive, we call aggressive penalties,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “I can handle a guy being aggressive getting penalties. It’s the undisciplined ones that cost you. We had a couple of those. The holdings are tough calls. The hands to the face (on Julian Rochester) is a tough call but not having two guys on the line of scrimmage — we got (Isaac) Nauta and (Riley) Ridley two freshmen over there on third and five, it stones the drive. It costs you.”
Added wide receiver Javon Wims: “With any team, penalties can cost you the game.”
