University of Georgia police Saturday night searched a dorm room occupied by two of the football team’s leading tacklers after a resident assistant reported the smell of burning marijuana, but no charges were filed, according to a UGA Police incident report.
Police responded to a call Saturday at 9:14 p.m. at the McWhorter Hall room of sophomore inside linebacker Natrez Patrick. Another sophomore inside linebacker, Roquan Smith, was with him.
“No charges will be pursued for possession of marijuana,” the reporting officer wrote in the report. “Although items identified as drug paraphernalia were found in Patrick’s room, I also declined to pursue charges for drug paraphernalia because I didn’t deem it necessary to make the charge without having any drug possession to go along with it. At such the investigation if exceptionally cleared.”
A Georgia athletic spokesman did not have any information about any possible suspensions for the players. Patrick was suspended for a game last year after a previous marijuana arrest and a second violation — if Georgia deems in this case — would mean a four game-suspension.
Patrick has 42 tackles and has started six games. Smith has 39 tackles and has four starts.
Police on Saturday found “a fake can of Arizona strawberry iced tea with a hidden compartment” below Patrick’s bathroom sink that had a “a strong odor of unburned marijuana” coming from it, according to the police incident report.
No marijuana was found in the can, but Patrick admitted to keeping marijuana in it when he actually had possession of it, but said he did not have any on this night, according to the report.
Patrick authorized police to search his room, according to a consent form he signed, according to the report.
Police were called after a resident assistant came across the marijuana smell during normal rounds and identified the room suspected of where it originated. The officer believed it was coming from the room as well.
Patrick and Smith didn’t respond to knocking initially after the officer identified being from the UGA police department, but the players responded after about 60 seconds.
“One minute,” one said, according to the report.
Thirty seconds later, the players opened the door and an even stronger odor came out of the room.
The players declined a search initially, but after police told Patrick a search warrant could be obtained, he gave consent.
Besides the tea can, police found a smoke buddy used to blow smoke through, tobacco gutted from cigars and rolled in paper towel, lighters and towels rolled up and pushed against door cracks.
Both players admitted to smoking cigars in the room, but not marijuana, according to the report.
