Georgia is moving three reserve players to new positions in practice during its bye week to try squeeze more out of a roster on a team that has lost three of its lost four games.
Coach Kirby Smart announced Tuesday that sophomore defensive lineman Michael Barnett will move to offensive tackle, redshirt freshman running back Tae Crowder will switch to inside linebacker and junior wide receiver Shakenneth Williams is going to defensive back.
None have played this season.
“We feel like those three guys are athletically probably better athletes than where they are on their current spot on the depth chart,” Smart said. “So we’re going to give those guys some work, find out what they can do. It’s really about us getting better. It’s developmental. We’ll teach them what to do but we want to see what they can do.”
Smart said Georgia wants to get a look to find out if the 6-foot-4, 292-pound Barnett, who had five tackles last season in seven games, can develop on the offensive line.
“He played a little bit in high school,” Smart said of the Dorchester, S.C., product. “He’s not in the rotation defensively (so) we’ll see where he would be as an offensive lineman. …To say he’s going to be able to walk-in and know our protections and know the pickups, I think it’s more you’re looking long term of where this guy can help.”
The 6-foot-3, 228-pound Crowder, who rushed for two touchdowns in the spring game, will help what Smart said are depth issues at inside linebacker, a spot where Tim Kimbrough left the team in the preseason and Reggie Carter missed a game with a concussion and was limited against Vanderbilt with what the SEC Network reported on its broadcast was a right wrist injury, although he returned to the game.
Crowder and Williams may be able to help on special teams. Smart said Crowder also may be able to rush on the outside on defense.
The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Williams has four catches for 71 yards in his career in 13 games.
Smart said the players will get a look for three practices this week.
Georgia went out on the practice field for light corrections work and will practice fundamental work on Tuesday and Wednesday for future opponents. The Bulldogs will begin work for the Oct. 29 game against Florida on Thursday.
